I always get the impression Gaiman thinks he's a better writer than he actually is.
>>
>>82825725
It's pretty much like the show. A lot of flash with visions and things but very barebones. I got very excited reading it when the premise was laid out that it was gonna be a battle between the old gods and the new gods, but the new gods aren't developed or elaborated upon in how they differ from the old and it was all very surface-level. I did enjoy all the cultural quirks and little anecdotes in the book though I just wish the plot came together a bit better.

as an arab I was kind of annoyed, then the Djinn was gay, not happy
>>
>>82826720
Anubis is a black jackal though. Instead you should be upset that they made one of your deities a raging faggot. You should really go and thank them or something. You know, do what it is you do, and remind them and thank them personally for all their efforts. You know what I mean when I say thank them, yeah?
>>
>>82825322

I think I read way too much into this, I interpreted it as the salesman wished to be with the Jinn, and he got wishmaster'ed into actually being the Jinn's new body
>>
>>82826957
It's the opposite, he got his wish granted.
>>
>>82826234
>>82825895
I was really disappointed that the "American Gods" were just simplistic icons of consumerism - television, shopping, etc. Could have been interesting if it delved more deeply into those concepts, but it just comes off as high school freshman edginess. Plus if we're being logical, there should be some 15th century god out there that represents the printing press.
>>
>>82827015
There probably was but had disappeared by now.

What would you have expected them to be instead, that wouldn't be high school edginess?

>>
>>82827015
>Could have been interesting if it delved more deeply into those concepts, but it just comes off as high school freshman edginess
Pretty much. The premise sounds cool. "Whoa, dude what if the old gods were usurped by the new gods of technology", but then there's nothing more to it. Just have "Media" show up and say a few lines and act exactly the same as the old gods. The aesthetic with the kid in the limo with the weird mask thing also looks terrible and jarring when mixed in with the old gods.
>>
>>82823291
>>82823369
I've heard grand plans of folding in the follow-up novellas into the plot, and working in elements of the sequel Gaiman's working on- probably with the hopes of eventually adapting that as well.
In an ideal world they'd do Anansi Boys but the BBC has the rights to that as far as I know.

What exactly happened in that scene?

Did the Muslim salesman become the Jinn, or did the Jinn take over the Muslim salesman's body?
>>
>>82825895

I liked the full cast audiobook a lot but even then there's parts where you roll your eyes just listening to it. Sandman comics were unironically 100x better than American Gods if you never checked them out. Amazing illustration.

But thats the whole point of the series.

Today people only care about futile things. They literely live to work and consume shit. Most of the time that they have they spent witth futile things and work.

How their gods could be any different? The old gods represented what people wanted to be on the past. The new gods looks like what people want to be on our era, a super rich genious know-all startup leader wannabe, a famous and beautiful actress (woman on the 80 wanted that at least), and so on.

The opening of the series actually hits the nail perfectly, things that were once sacred perverted by drugs, technology and all kind of things... Hundreads of tradition distorted by the culture of today.

Think about the old world, thousand and thousand of years of tradition and values.. Old gods were built on that. The new world has just half century and no much to add on value or tradition.

And there is probably a press god, so far we saw only two new gods, the book describes a lot of them and if you think well its natural that Media is more proeminent than any press god.
>>

How is that any different than in the past when people only lived to work to survive? We're uneducated farmers preferable to a wagecuck who comes home and watches TV? At the end of the day that person can at least save up and go on trips to places the farmer could only dream of.

The people actually dedicating their lives to significant stuff--the wealthy--are still doing that today. That has never changed.

>>82832214

A god feeds on everything that represents him until his existence is completely forgotten. Thing that represents him directly would be better of course. On the series we see gods looking for source of powers that were barely related to them.

Odin is not just the god of war. Gods are more complex than just a single element, he is also a god of death, communication, wisdom.. Before he is a warrior he was mainly a traveler, seducer and trickster... So only the fact that he may con his way in on everything may help him keep the shape. But of course, Odin is also ambitious.

>>
>>82832830
Because people valued that.

Its not about how you live, but the meaning about what you do or at least the meaning that this have to you.

On tribal cultures the tribe was everything, people would only endure if they help each other. They respected that, they lived for that.

Think of the vikings, on their culture a man value was all about how good he was as a farmer or a warrior, how he could provide. They valued courage, a battle was something glorious, a test of each one value. They lived for that. They would die for that. Yeah, they were a bunch of rapist and pirates... But they had a clear idea about what their values were.

Could you say that you respect what the media and TV is? Could you say that the internet represent some kind of dignity? That after years losing a absurd number of hours on the internet you will not look back and notice that you lost time on a futile thing? Yeah, its fun, but its also a time that is lost and will never come back. We are alll giving our lifes to the new gods and this is sacry and futile as it sounds.

Yes, we live far better than our ancestours.. with lifes that were far more futile than theirs, this is our gift and our curse.

That’s pretty much inevitable with any book adaption, as you can say much more with text then video but the book does kinda ramble on (I’ve got the longer “author’s preferred edition”) and I don’t feel much is being lost.

I’m just happy the tv show sticking to the original story, instead of shitting it up with retarded original content *coughGoTcough*

Life was a lot more laid back in oldy timey days.

Sure, farmers might bust their ass 16 hours a day during harvest time, but that was just a few weeks each year, they weren’t punching a time clock day in and day out like we do.

Modern society is highly constrained and stressful, with virtually every minute of our lives scheduled and planned out for us, (usually by other people) whether it's work or school or family commitments, etc.

Even our “time off” is scheduled to a few three-day weekends and holidays per year.

Algerians migrated to Africa. Their ancestry is majority European. They are a mix of many European groups: Greek,Phoenician, Roman and French. The Algerians you see today are not native to the land of AFRICA in anyway shape or form. Their ancestors displaced the original black Berber inhabitants and claimed the land for themselves much the same as Native Americans were displaced by European whites in the united States. Europeans colonized nearly every inch of the globe in this same manner.
