Does Alien: Covenant redeem Prometheus or is it another shit entry into the series?

Which one did you like better?
>>
Prometheus is the better movie
Covenant is the better flick
>>
It does to Prometheus what Alien3 did to Aliens.

Make promethues and all that optimistic potential worth nothing in the end. Shaw is wasted and David is turned into stereotypical crazy robot.
>>
Liked both of them a lot to be quite honest with you anon.
>>
>>82789794
This. Ridley's lost his fucking mind, but maybe he already did with Prometheus. It's a good movie since it's quite gorey and not shy with it, but it's just not an 'Alien' movie
>>
>>82789775
Prometheus is pure garbage. Tried to be deep but failed utterly.
>>
>>82789718
I liked Covenant more, that said I liked Prometheus so I guess I'm a bit of a contrarian.
>>
>>82789826
It's probably the most 'Alien' move since Aliens.

I realize that's already a loaded statement, but eh

They’re both literally George Lucas prequel—tier movies: telling stories no one wanted to be told, and expanding on thing nobody wanted to be expanded upon. Ridley now even has his own “midichlorian” meme plot device in form of black goo.

That's what happens when you're a technically competent director, but the real creative force behind you is your production team. So when you try to revisit your iconic movie without that creative collaboration, this is what happens.
>>
It's weird for me but thinking about it I never connected Prometheus to the Alien universe. I know it sounds retarded but to me it's its own thing that doesn't really play into anything really Alien related. Same with Alien: Covenant. I know they are both part of the same universe but when I think of Alien I think of four movies and that's it. It's like Prometheus and A:C aren't really there. Anyone else think like that?
>>
>>82789718
It didn´t redeem Prometheus and its another shit entry into the series, a lots of literally why.
>>
I liked the xenomorphs better when they were ancient alien creatures of unknown origin, not the result of some unexplained, nonsensical experiment
I liked the Space Jockeys when they were mysterious giant aliens with trunks, not bald albino assholes
Everything is Prometheus and Covenant is almost completely nonsensical, it doesn't even feel like the same franchise
>>
There are people in this thread who think Prometheus and Covenant weren't irreedeemable pieces of shit doomed from the get go and executed worse than anybody could have ever dreamed. You share a board with this people.
>>
>>82790060
The "Alien" franchise is pretty much a trainwreck anyway. Ridley wasn't part of 75% of the Alien movies. Then AVP came out and is semi-canon. Now ridley is back and doing an even shittier job that other directors and the spinoffs.

Frankly, I don't even like the Alien franchise at this point. Aliens if decent and AVP is fun, but otherwise it's not interesting.

>>82790060
Alien is a shit franchise. There was enough gas in the tank for 2 great movies. The first one and the sequel, which used the same monster in different ways effectively.

There was nowhere to go after that. The only other piece of Alien media you might want is Isolation if you're a gaymer.

Otherwise, just ignore everything else and do what a lot of people do and don't even acknowledge any other media as being related to it.
>>
>>82790374

Alien Ressurection is kino, you gigantic pleb. At leas Jeunet had the balls to run the whole damn thing off the rails and make it really different with its own look, he didn't half-ass it like Riddley did.
>>
Covenant is utter garbage. It's not even so bad it's good, its just terrible. I thought it was gonna be amazing at the start up to the point with the back buster, which was the highlight of the whole film. After that it turns to shit so fast.

I have never understood the robots having super strength thing.

Why? Why give a robot superhuman strength? Make it just as strong as your average male or weaker, and you never have to worry about it ripping the crew in half.

Jeunet actually sucseeded where Ridley failed, because he wasn't afraid to take actual creative risks and invited other creative sources like "Alien: Labirythn" to be incorporated into it. Deal with it normie pleb trash.
>>

He succeeded in making one of the worst movies in the history of cinema. Jeunet is literally a trash director senpai.

>>
>>82790434

Alien Resurrection is bad and you should feel ashamed. You have 2 movies wich are realistic with a naturalistic aproach to a Lovecraftian horror. Then suddenly a nigger who can shot bullets in angles and hit everything. Too cartoony to be part of Alien legacy.

Resurrection is in the same pool as both AVP movies.
>>
>>82790554

>>
>>82791660
Excuse you, fucker, only one Alien film had anything even resembling cosmic horror.
>>
They're both great for me as a fan of the series.

Prometheus had the more interesting lore but Covenant is the better film.

After the backlash about the complicated engineer plot from normies I'm glad they gave it some closure instead of pretending it never happened and went back to a traditional Alien film.
>>
why is there no camrip?
>>
>>82791813
>Excuse you, fucker, only one Alien film had anything even resembling cosmic horror.

And that´s not Alien Resurrection.
>>
Shaw and the Engineers appear to have been wasted potential. Vickers also should have been left alive, as the dynamic between her and Shaw as they try to find out about the Engineers could have been interesting.

I don't really get why the Alien series needs a robot supervillain. That's not what people think about when they think about Alien.
>>
>>82789718
Covenant is flute kino.
>>
>>82791825
>After the backlash about the complicated engineer plot from normies

The backlash never was for the engenieers, but for the retarded plot and actions of the characters.
>>
>>82790554
It's just more practical. If they have the option and believed they programmed them so they'd never use it on humans then it makes sense for them to be strong so they can do heavy lifting we aren't capable of.

Everyone died too fast.

I was almost expecting The Thing V Alien type of thing when the first albino popped through that guys back. But then in like 5 minutes everyone else just dies to make way for homo-robotic scenes.

not the worst but could have been better.
>>
>>82790181
Yep. Fucking retards
>>
What was the point in making Christopher religious? I'd buy it if he used his faith to rebel against David's view of a divine creator that's so close to humans, but they killed him off after making a number of terrible decisions that got everyone killed. And he just whined pathetically in every scene. Also why did David bring everyone back to the city if he didn't expect them to look around and find out what he'd been doing?
>>
>>82792083
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT
>>
>>82791898
Clearly it isn't since the robots have a tendency to bug out and murder people and there are already loaders and shit that can do that work better.

I'd make my robot in the visage of that kid from Little People Big World so when he went rogue I could just punt him like a football out of the spaceship.
>>
It has plotholes. The engineers make no sense. They had faster than light travel millions of years ago, before life existed on earth, yet have not advanced enough since then to survive a chemical attack.
>>
>>82789775
>nu/tv/fag that thinks what he is talking about
fucking kys retarded nigger
>>
>>82792041
Except he doesn't create it, he perfects it to kill humans which is a far better explanation as to why they are so good at killing humans than "it just is" from the original Alien.

The mystery of how and why it ends up on LV426 is still there since we don't know his full motives or why there was a crashed Engineer ship
>>
>>82792313
When have they bugged out? I only recall David and they mentioned how they saw he was too human and scaled it back. They've otherwise been reliable and useful in carrying out the tasks they were set (even if they were sinister because Weyland told them to)
>>
>>82791973
No one, it's a shitty alien movie and a shitty Prometheus movie. I mean if you like sets the sets are pretty cool but that all it has going for it.

>>
Prometheus could have been okay with some tweaks. Covenant is retarded.
>>
>>82792496
Because it was always going to be a retcon since there was no lore in place anyway. And I feel the whole idea of an Android having contempt for humanity and being annoyed that he isn't allowed to create even though he is more advanced than his maker is actually pretty decent sci-fi.

It isn't midichlorians, the engineers are still unexplained, we just know their homeworld got fucked by David. For all we know they could still exist on other worlds.

They've explained some of Alien's mystery but not all. Kill yourself I loved this film fagit
>>
>>82792231

I found his whole 'I saw the devil once when I was a kid' line odd too.
Did he literally believe he had seen the devil? or was he talking metaphorically about seeing some nasty shit
>>
So, how and why did Shaw repair David? A talking head isn't a threat.
>>
>>82792740
Maybe he'd experienced other people who claimed to be God, or speaking for god in his youth and they just had sinister intentions. It came off like he'd been molested as a kid though, there were a lot of odd sexual themes revolving around David.
>>
>>82792756

probably to keep him alive for longer so he can navigate and repair shit.
>>
>>82792471
Ash, who was programmed to take orders outside the crew which became a major problem.

Bishop explicitly states that androids can be "twitchy" and were prone to programming issues.

Bishop himself despite being assigned to a detachment of marines did not possess any incredible physical abilities nor did any other robot including ash, all of which are newer models of David.

Don't listen to the Lindolf cum swapping faggots, Covenant is a marked improvement over that pile of shit.

3rd best Alien film easily, although that doesn't exactly say much.
>>
>>82791960
Even Prometheus's garbage writing and dialogue wasn't as bad as anything in those horrendous Star Wars prequels.

It also has the benefit of not looking like absolute shit with laughably cartoonish CGI.
>>
>>82793111
Just like in Prometheus, I found it incredibly strange that nobody seems more than mildly perplexed at the discovery of an advanced alien race that has mastered space travel. They just walk up to the ship and go "oh look, a weird ship. WY didn't make this." If you just discovered proof of alien life, surely you'd be a little more intrigued, amazed or afraid?
>>
>>82793156
But Shaw's not an engineer, how did she know how to fix him? They weren't even on the Prometheus with spare parts or human tools either.
>>
>>82791516
Agreed.
>>
Why do we send human beings down to inspect the surface of these planets? I know there was a thread last night with some Prometheus apologist talking about how it isn't retarded that they took off their helmets as soon as a device told them that they might be able to breathe but seriously why are you sending humans in the first place? Prometheus clearly demonstrates that not only do the humans have fucking Androids they can send to go monitor it for a while to determine if it is safe or not but they also have drones that are fully capable of scouting the alien structure out.

And how are we supposed to reconcile all this technology being present before Alien? Is Scott so fucking lazy that he'd rather not take the time and the risk of keeping it consistent and having to think about how things would happen were they not using drones and touch screens.

Well, what they did was skip/eliminate anything cool that could have happened with Shaw and David and the Engineers and told some nonsense bullshit story that no one gives a shit about and the setup for the next film isn't cool at all. It took Prometheus, shitted all over that shit pile, and made it worse.

>How will the events of Alien be set up?

There'll be an engineer character in the next movie to tie everything together. The pilot on LV426 had its chest burst open, so we'll get on another ship, somehow and have a scene with an engineer alien killing everyone on board, then the ship crashes into the planet, then broadcast the distress signal and a shot of the Nostromo just to make sure the audience gets what's going on. In the last scene last scene a CGI young Sigourney Weaver is looking at the radar screen, and a CGI young Tom Skerritt walks up next to her and says "What is it?" And she just replies "Alien."

Captains orders. She probably cared for her other crew members as well

I think they had gotten through the storm by 40km

>how did david get the upper hand in the fight with walter when he was literally pinned down and about to be hit in the face again, after having been punched in the face several times?
David is somewhat smarter due to being able to create his own things. Walter can learn things but not create them. For all we know David created a finishing move that Walter could not fight against

sure, a lot of this is valid, but what i still have a problem is the first flight into the storm, the chick changing her mind, david creating a "finishing move". that last one you are just pulling out of your ass.

the signal wasn't even a distress beacon, it was just a signal being transmitted. just send a signal back. but no, lets fly straight onto this strange and unfamiliar planet with a massive storm going on which will knock out our comms.

orders or not, she was railing against him until she just changed her mind. and there would be literally no point in putting themselves in further danger, it was 2 versus 1 plus the ship telling them there was a high chance of getting torn apart. but whatever, emotional orders.

Probably a conflict with the set designer and the environmental designer. The central city's clearly modelled after St. Peter's as a nod to human artistic achievement and going back to David, but there had to be a plot reason that the Covenant couldn't just land on the planet. This also makes a terrible case for even thinking about settling on the planet, as passing through the atmosphere was deemed too dangerous by Mother. Were they going to ferry every colonist down to the planet in the only vessel they had available to do so? And what about the colonists' reaction when they wake up and find out they're not where they were told they were going to wake be when they woke up?
>>

>why David killed the engineers though

he was rebelling against his creators, like Prometheus and Frankenstein did

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankenstein
>>
>>82796684
I don't think the Engineers created the Goo. I think the whole theme of Prometheus is that the Engineers stole it from who ever created them, hence keeping the vials in rooms with big face status of their 'Gods'. Then humans steal it from the Engineers and the Prometheus legend carries on.

Ridley already said that the Engineers wanted to kill Humanity because they saw humans as inferior and a mistake that would come back to haunt them, as they did.

The Goo breaks a part DNA and reuses it to make new life. Too much of it just tears all the DNA apart, like it did to the Engineer who drank a whole vial. A little drop in a glass like David gave to the scientist guy was just enough to cause a mutation that allowed him to pass something on to Shaw before he also was torn apart.
>>
>>82796972
the goo is very clearly nanobots, and thus programmable

and there's no basis for assuming the engineers didn't make it
>>
If enginer create humans ,,,then who create animls
>>
>>82797012
Why do you think it's programmable? I don't think the goo on the walls that David uses as buttons was the same as the goo in the vials.

I think the statues in the Vial room look different to the Engineers, I think they are searching for their creators and seeding new life just as David is going to.
>>
>>82797217
wall goo was clearly bioengineered algae that was producing the oxygen for the ship

and I'm saying it's programmable under the nanobot theory and because we've seen it do different things

>why did the engineers create the black liquid?

Apparently to fight some war against another race, not sure if they created it or found it

>what were their plans with the black liquid?

To use it as a weapon, but they discovered in the process that combined with their DNA it creates Deacons (the proto alien in Prometheus ending), that's why there is a Deacon mural in Prometheus, it's not an Alien Queen like everyone thinks.

>why does the black liquid kill the engineers but create aliens out of the humans?

It's all about quantity, a lot of black liquid simply destroys organic life, drinking some of it disolves them into DNA strings, that's how they created life in earth.

The spores are different, think of them as some sort of nano facehuggers, once they enter an organic body it combines with it and create the neopmoprh embryos.

>How did David create the face-hugger eggs when he would need a queen for that?

He made Shawn some sort of proto queen after a lot of trial and error

>How did a random alien get onto the covenant?

watch the movie again, the gay dude was in contact with the facehugger

>How will the events of Alien be set up? How do a bunch of eggs end up on the space jockies ship?

we need to wait for the next movies

>How was the black liquid created to be in an airborne form?

good question

>Does David see himself as a God now?

he just likes to create things now, to see how far their ultimate lifeforms can go

Germs aren't the main issue, the number of variables in an atmosphere make it completely ridiculous to send humans out first when you can send disposable robots, that don't need things like air, or food and won't get sick because of radiation local to the planet or generated by the ayys.

That idiot takes his helmet off because he detects a breathable atmosphere, he doesn't wait to see if it is a momentary phenomenon, it should also be noted that that without the helmet on in an emergency situation he would likely die. The characters in Prometheus were far too stupid to be actual scientists, and far too unprepared to be allowed into space.

What. Nigga the Deacon was born from the engineer that got grabbed by mega squid. And Mega Squid was born from a human who got a little bit of black goo in them and then fucking it into their girlfriend somehow. Unless that changed in this movie you need Mega Squid to make Deacons.

Well, according to Ridley, after killing Jesus (who was an engineer that came back to earth to watch how did their experiment go), they got butthurt and concluded that humans were a failure so they tried to get rid of them before it was to late.

In other words, IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE FUCKING JEWS GODDAMIT

Also, my bet Is that the engineer killed David because they got butthurt again after that their imperfect creation (humans) created the perfect lifeform (androids)
>>
>>82802235
>part of the charm in these kind of movies is to figure it out yourself
Oh, I totally agree.
Good hints leave wide, open questions; combinations, not contradictions.
Bad hints leave people building convoluted shit to justify the price paid for the ticket.
Case above is Alien, case below is Prometheus.
Also, which one of the two is a good story by its own, and which one isn't? Yeah, right.
>>
>>82801221
Also it makes me rage when the main guy in Prometheus whines and cries because a fucking head they just recovered from an alien world doesn't give them all the answers to the universe.
Like you're day1 into a huge expedition, the biggest since the silent era, and you get mad because on day1 you "only" found a fucking intact head and a giant heap of ruins.
It's like everyone in Prometheus is a giant baby, modern scientists get orgasms from finding small traces of DNA on rocks, imagine finding something as huge as Prometheus.

The behaviour doesn't make sense in any case.

Exobiologist Hugh Derry revives a dormant cell from the sample, and it quickly grows into a multi-celled organism that American school children name "Calvin"
>After Rory unsuccessfully attacks Calvin with a flame thrower Calvin enters his mouth, killing him from the inside.

do the baby neomorph have some sort of numbing poison?

the bitch had a knife and had already kicked it. Yet it just jumped on her chest and start cleaving and she just started flailing her limbs around like she forget she had the knife.

also why would you entre the medical room with an alien that just killed someone. And why would the glass to the medical room have an easily broken pane of glass not some future plexiglass shit, two head butts from a 6 inch tall newborn neomorphs seems a little weak.

Your nervous system can get jammed up when you have conflicting signals and the situation gets a lot worse if you are not in control of yourself. Think about how one walks with a stubbed toe or how some people have to fight to get words out when they are scared and multiply that by a thousand.

Not really. From what I've read the aerospace industry is thoroughly pessimistic and cynical, even disbelieving their own models if things seem too optimistic. We could have replaced chemical rockets with more efficient electric ones years ago.

>kill humans
It evolves humans. The goo and Engineering tech helps David create and rebuild DNA. The egg is a mutated Dr Shaw egg, designed to hold face-huggers (which are a mixture of human DNA - elongated fingers/extended tail bone/full blown reproduction system of human vagina/testicles/penis). It needs an old human's form to host and take DNA from.

David is evolving humans, as humans have evolved his species.

Once Ridley is done, the franchise shall be named correctly - Human/s.

Prometheus is better (despite the dumbness at points) and a genuinely good hard sci-fi movie, but Alien Covenant is fun. I'm glad it's more of a sequel to Prometheus than a prequel to Alien.

Still, it's time they stop writing characters that walk in alien planets without a fucking helmet on, which literally triggers all problems every single time.

>redeem

That's the problem. There is no movie redemption. When I give up 2 hours of my life I expect to walk away satisfied with the product I've just watched.

Hollywood is trying to do le cliff hanger bullshit because they saw it worked so well for tv shows. People don't actually want good viewing; they want an escape from reality. The longer that escape, the better.

Which is why Prometheus is a dog shit movie. It didn't answer anything. All it did was show that no matter how shit each installment, people will return to the theaters over and over just because of their nostalgia for the motifs from the films they've enjoyed.

Of course, nothing is ever actually concluded with these "franchises". They simply go in circles forever or 'up the stakes' right when you think things can't possibly get any more outrageous.

Really, David the android wiping out an entire civilization? What the fuck? Do yourselves a favor and don't see covenant in theaters. None of your questions will ever be fully answered. Ridley Scott has no idea what he's doing, and a lot of the fan theories on this board are probably more intricate and detailed than anything you'll see in the actual movies.

I thought the guy with the burnt face (from the facehugger)... it had already impregnated him by the time they got it off.

His buddy got jumped by the full Captain Jesus chestburster, so he got away.

Jesus-morph died on the crane.

burnt-faced got bursted once on board, and everyone went to bed for a bit
