You may notice in the news or film credits that a movie or show is filmed in Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, etc. instead of LA because of tax credits. There's also a shitload of loans, from major studios to those existing just to loan money (those multiple companies in the opening credits). That latter part is where most of the money comes from and if too many people ask for points on box office profit instead of gross, Hollywood accounting comes into play to avoid those payments.

I thought so too. It was almost as if they tried to mash together Lord of the Rings and a bongland street gang movie under the very loose guise of a King Arthur story, all while trying to emulate a Dark Souls aesthetic and failing miserably. Not to mention the choppy scenes and constant flashbacks to remind the audience for the millionth time how the characters are supposed to be feeling and why (as if we don't have brains and can't into story progression and character motivation).

Also the make girl character was shit. So much wasted potential.

Creative bankruptcy, medieval European light fantasy is boring as shit and nobody gives a fuck

Ever noticed how successful fantasy literature is often vibrant, colorful and creative, but then when it's adapted into television and film it's just the same old stale gritty shit (or as is the case here, they just adapt the same work over and over)

I'd like to see Fantasy mixed with literally any historical time and place that isn't Medieval France/England, preferably without nigs

The are quite a few books on the filmmaking industry. It's up to you to peruse reviews to see which is actually good though. The information I posted was from various google searches across many websites.

I like Deadline's yearly review of profitable movies of the previous year, usually released every March to tie in with March Madness. Take, for example, participations.

See how Civil War, Deadpool, and BvS dwarf everything else? I know for a fact RDJ still has his points on BO gross (smart) in addition to his salary, which was a big sticking point back when Ike Perlmutter was still in charge. Ryan Reynolds took less money so he could have greater creative control and got paid for the success. I don't know who on BvS got that deal, but it could be anyone from the actors to producers.

I actually liked how Arthur wielding Excalibur was sort of like the exact opposite of Frodo putting on the One Ring. It was a bit like seeing what would happen if an actual badass had ever put on the ring and instead of being corrupted by it, instead became more noble.

Arthur was just laying WASTE to shit. And the people around him, even his friends, reacted to it like almost being in the presence of a god.

>Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword first looks like a video game, then it borrows from assorted action-adventure films – Gladiator, 300, Lord of the Rings – as if genre imitation was necessary to hold the audience’s interest in British legend and history. This quite silly emphasis on fantasy confirms that most gamers and filmgoers today know as little about medieval history as they do about contemporary civics. Both disciplines are currently in disarray, so Ritchie’s King Arthur addresses the mess by making a cultural collage.

>Modern politics — as well as essential, unchanging human personality — come into play in Ritchie’s historical, action-adventure extravaganza. After Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) has fought his battles and just consolidated his governing council, he gives warning to the Norse envoy Greybeard (Mikael Persbrandt): “Why have enemies when you can have friends?” The surprisingly witty scene is entertainingly pertinent to our changing — and challenging — global moment.

>Ritchie replaces the Arthurian romanticism handed down from Malory and T. H. White, Camelot and John Boorman’s Excalibur, with his own Laddish impudence. While the dialogue is modern, urban vulgate — dismissing with “Thous,” “arts,” and “forsooths” — the spirit is authentic. “Oi!” and “You big silly posh bastard!” are national history and modern civics as Brits are living it now. Given the woeful absence of credible political humor in pop culture, King Arthur’s impudent mirth fills the gap with topical parallels that work satirically. It honestly replicates crude, ignorant, uninspired, and non-committed behavior among our politicians and citizenry. Ritchie’s vision is comic — not nihilistic — recognition. It’s as authentic as a Monty Python skit but with a preferable Laddish tone.

>King Arthur is precisely what Quentin Tarantino could not do with American history in Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. When Arthur rescues a boy who has witnessed his father’s brutalization by the evil usurper Vortigern (Jude Law), the montage connecting savagery, screaming, silence, and escape specifically improves on the carnage of Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino’s sheer sadism lacks the sexy, game-playing frivolity of Ritchie’s violent jamborees. King Arthur ranks with Ritchie’s best antic japes.

>We who have been waiting for Ritchie’s waggishly promised sequel to his sleek, stylish RocknRolla (2008) may have to content ourselves with King Arthur. It’s RocknRolla revised as Camelot: egalitarian and postcolonial (multiracial), a muddy, mystically murky, roughly formed society in which Arthur, like other Ritchie heroes, is tutored as a commoner but gains an ethical sense of duty. The redemptive, dreamlike image of Arthur receiving the weighty sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake — both suspended in time, both underwater — pays rightful homage to Boorman’s visually exquisite 1981 epic. It reimagines royalty as honor that is earned, respect that is acquired through virtue and courage.

>This fantasy history might seem as remote as the Middle Ages are from today’s berserk political correctness, yet at its core it is a romantic ideal — impressively embodied by Hunnam (now liberated from the nonsense of The Lost Island of Z).

>Arthur’s first use of the sword Excalibur might be the best battle scene in any Arthurian movie since Boorman’s — the sword vanquishes but it also vibrates, endowing its bearer with obligation. This weightiness refines Arthur’s rascality. There’s a natural resemblance to young Prince Hal carousing with Falstaff, just as Orson Welles dramatized in Chimes at Midnight. This appreciation of wild youth incubating in the British monarchy is key to Ritchie’s instinct that lad culture is connected to a Tory heritage — reminiscent of Bryan Ferry’s cover image for Roxy Music’s timeless, chivalrous make-out album Avalon. All that, plus Hunnam — with his chin-up, goateed, regal profile — knows how to wear a crown.

I did, and I thought it was pretty fucking good. I honestly don't know what the fuck is up with critics. This is clearly not trying to be anything but its own story, so shitting on it for anachronisms and not being faithful to the legends makes zero sense.

I did. It's a bit of a mess of a movie. You have some typical Ritchie parts and a bunch of CGI fueled sequences which don't really bring much.

All in all it's a mixed bag because it's doesn't know what it wants to be and the editing is pretty atrocious as well. Also the final fight was so bizzare to me because it's almost entirely CGI so I don't know why Ritchie approved this.

It's watchable.

>>82782280
Sorry, here's a TLDR post to clarify.

I meant stylistically. The way the rapid cut shots are set up, the jumps back and forward and back again through time to set up a scene. The sputtering dialogue. I think the best example of this was that scene where they were running through the city or woods or w.e it was and had go pros attached to them. It took me completely out of the movie. Guy Ritchie has this style of creating these really hyperactive visual narratives that work well for crime movies like Snatch and Lock Stock, or even for Sherlock Holmes where you're essentially taken inside the mind of this eccentric genius, but for this high fantasy epic it really didn't feel like a solid fit at all.

>It didn't strike me as hard to follow nor did it strike me as making huge leaps of logic and just expecting the audience to make the leaps on faith

I partially disagree. I agree it wasn't hard to understand what was going on, nor did it require giant logical leaps to make sense, but I did feel the movie rested on a ground of 'This is what we're doing now, because we're doing it'. I blame that more on the acting and characters though, because they didn't really carry any motivation or direction. I think the reason behind that is Guy Ritchie probably built a very large world with a fleshed out backstory, but due to his aforementioned style he didn't really set it up that great.

I also thought Charlie Hunnam was dead. Yet another case of him playing a rough-around-the-edges bad boy with a heart of gold, and I don't think it worked. It did in Pacific Rim, it seems okay in what little I've seen of SoA, but here it just fell flat.

I can get where you're coming from with the chase scene, but I don't really agree with that assessment. Instead of taking me out of it, it made it a lot more immersive to me. It made it feel claustrophobic, frantic, and like you were right there with them.

As far as character motivations go, they're pretty straightforward - there's a usurper on the throne. The "resistance" were all followers of Arthur's father and rightful king.

The horror. Movie bombed because it's trash and the marketing for it was almost nonexistent or correctly conveyed the message that the movie would suck.
>>
>>82782600
>As far as character motivations go, they're pretty straightforward - there's a usurper on the throne. The "resistance" were all followers of Arthur's father and rightful king.

I know that was there motivation. I'm just saying it didn't feel authentic. Arthur seemed like a bit of a brat, and his great journey didn't really seem to be becoming a great king or even a good man, there was merely that throwaway 'this is what Vortigern will do' scene that lasted like 5 second. Tt was more about killing his own demons, both figurative and literal. Which is fine, but doesn't really seem to be that great inspirational presence they all want to follow for any reason other than him being the son of the last good king. They didn't even really establish Vortigern as being particularly bad. They showed the black legs as corrupt, and he made a deal with the ""Vikings""", but thats the kind of shit Kings do. Worst I can think of that was open subjugation of his realm was making them all bow. It was squirrely, but they never really established him as a great threat and oppressor of the people. The only real establishment of him as a bad guy felt like it was just how he got the power, (killing Uther, his wife and daughter), rather than what he did with it. He seemed like the Empire in Star Wars, but without that real looming, ominous threat and feeling of imposement they were able to embody.

The hell was this film trying to do? If it was to pay homage to the original tale then it failed by being beyond idiotic in its presentation of its characters and Arthurian England.
If it was to be its own unique thing then it also failed miserablly. Being both a grey generic low fantasy that foolishly aped Lord of the rings with a "quirky" twist.
Seriously what where they trying to achieve?

I went to see it.

Not good

Dreary, washed out visuals, ugly CGI, horrible quick jerky edits, terrible music, eyeroll inspiring overly quippy dialogue, blatant overseas pandering with the chinese martial artist shit, not even to mention the arbitrary diversity casting.

Vortigern is the principal antagonist (you can tell he's evil because his soldiers do the nazi salute) and we're treated to skyscraping CGI elephants and a myriad of snakes, but no mention at all of dragons WHY

Charlie Hunnam has the tremendous ability to look like a total douchebag at all times no matter what he's doing and he manages to worm in that thing where he hooks his thumbs on the front belt loops of his pants despite the fact that im pretty sure the pants he wears all movie have no belt loops.

there's this great scene at the beginning of the movie, that they flashback to every 30 seconds, where Uther puts baby moses in a boat as Vortigern's men raze Camelot, when Shao Kahn shows up and throws a 3D effect at the audience through Arthur's Mom. Uther proves to be ALL TOO EASY but then does this sick knife toss with Excalibur where it like goes up in the air and spins around before impaling him and turning him into the stone that Arthur has to pull the sword from at which point i laughed out loud in the theatre for like a solid 2 minutes

It's just not fun. Not even on the level of a sword and sorcery flick. All the magic stuff has been ripped wholesale from Game of Thrones, the fight scenes are edited like shit, the world looks more like someone's muddy back yard than sweeping English countryside. You never get connected with the characters either. They don't really receive proper introductions, their names kind of get dropped in passing after they've already been established as cast members. I don't even know what the bitch in the blue cloak's name was- they just kept calling her 'mage'.

I have more to say but I keep hitting the post length limit. Don't watch this movie.
>>
>>82785661
>Although, I suppose you could say that that was the moment when this Arthur was "born."

> Vortigern is the principal antagonist (you can tell he's evil because his soldiers do the nazi salute) and we're treated to skyscraping CGI elephants and a myriad of snakes, but no mention at all of dragons WHY
Because there is none in this universe. Giant elephants are part of the middle age bestiary, many paintings can be found depicting them. Beside, dragons are small and annoying, forget your GoT nonsense.
> im pretty sure the pants he wears all movie have no belt loops.
C'mon you can do better than that. But he's indeed a terrible king Arthur, who rejects his peer's ideas and will pick up a fight when he clearly said he wouldn't pick one, which is an agressive and douchy thing Arthur would have never done unless under the influence of a spell or a bad seneschal.
> at which point i laughed out loud in the theatre for like a solid 2 minutes
I thought it was cool, funny too. One needless flashback was like 2 minutes after Blue's father was killed and his scream. We've JUST seen it, Ritchie, no need to remind us so soon.
> All the magic stuff has been ripped wholesale from Game of Thrones
I hope that's not your real opinion. Vortigern was a lord so mean to his poeple, they talkshitted behind his back and even gave him some evil magic powers to back up their madmouthing. It's just a more crude depicting of that madmouthing. But I can see where you're coming from with the supporting cast, they were indeed sir Percival, sir Tristan, sir Bedivere, etc. but those name gave absolutely no impact to the story, it was just namedropping for the sake of namedropping.

>Because there is none in this universe.
Vortigern in the historia brittonum is a dude who keeps trying to build a fortress on a hill only to have it destroyed by a mysterious force. A young wizard takes him underground and shows him two dragons, a white one and a red one, fighting, and it is their conflict that causes the continued demolition of Vortigern's construction project. I'm saying it's a wasted opportunity for a movie that has giant fucking CGI snakes to use a character who's legend is directly connected to one of the only 'historic' accounts of dragons, and then not have dragons in your picture.

surely there will be a RED MAN along her, right?
>>
>>82786158
Mordred was the mate that Uther faced off against in the intro. Uther is essentially classic King Arthur in this, complete with Camelot.
>>
>>82781122
lol no
>>
>>82778660
Nigs were present tho, not in the low-budget-fantasy-tv -numbers like in this film, but occasional nogs did end up in Europe. One or two in non-important roles would be gud enough.

>>82786201
not an argument

Right, but that happened after we'd seen him go full-on badass with the sword already, didn't it?

Because pic related is impossible to compete with. The trailer for that movie looks like fucking garbage.
>>
>>82786507
Which is good, because it's in no way trying to compete with Excalibur. It has altogether different themes.
>>
>>82786582
>It has altogether different themes.
I think that's the problem, you can't exactly deviate too much when trying to make an Arthur movie and this exactly what happened with the piece of shit in the OP
>>
>>82777152
Is there one person surprised by this?
>>
>>82786582
>King Arthur movies are not related at all and shouldn't be compared

It's theme is garbage,it gets a 10/10.

If Excalibur were released today, it would be shit on for a lot of the same reasons this movie's getting hammered. Take it from a guy old enough to have seen them both on release.

Genuine criticism is dead. It's all just bandwagonism from here on out.
>>
now I wanna watch it out of contrarianism, did the same thing with Lone Ranger
>>
>>82777152
The only marketing for this was Guy Ritchie going on an MMA commentator's podcast

Literally the only way I found out about this garbage

Well you have to establish some liberal cred with the audience out there. Especially these days.

Ok so I just have to ask why is diversity ok in some movies like Robin Hood for example but wrong when it's medieval fantasy like King Arthur?

>muh WE WUZ EUROPEANS NN SHIEEET
Dude, get off your afrocentrist facebook trash and keep it containted.

Negroes, asians and muslims in Europe, without being slayed, are a late 20th century thing, isolated to a very few cities.
Did some kings have castrated nigger jesters/fucktoys as gifts from turkish sultans or portuguese traders? A very few.
Did some kings have nubian personal sluts to fuck? Yeah, again a very few.

But in no way did their numbers ever exceed 100 on in the whole continent, slave ships were never allowed to go to Europe's ports, Europe never bought slaves, the borders were religiously protected back then, not like today.
Any blacks that ever lived in Europe prior to the 20th century were castrated male jesters/eunuchs or female mistresses.
