Never seen waterworld but I really liked the Postman. I watched it before I saw Dances with Wolves though and I like that movie better.

I haven't seen the postman for a while now...might find it a little slow and boring if I did.

The Postman is a great concept and I really liked. My only problem with Waterworld is that feels disjointed: Sometimes it tries to be like mad max, sometimes a fantasy adventure and sometimes is really cartoony, I love Dennis hooper but he is over the top here.

The Postman feels more coherent and the setting is really interesting, also photography is really good. I can understand the hate for Waterworld, but not for The Postman.

Anyone who hates Waterworld is a terrible human being.

The setting was original, and even if it didn't feel like they spent near enough time on the movie, Costner was great and the lead actress was MILF-tier.

Good setting + Kevin Costner + MILF love interest = A great movie by default --- Also, the scene where they barter with the crazy guy for paper is absolute kino.

I like the "idea" of The Postman and its setting a lot more than Waterworld, but if you asked me which movie I just wanted to sit down and watch start to finish, it would be Waterworld.

Both are ripoffs of The Road Warrior in a sense, but I think Waterworld is a little more of a ripoff, and I think the premise is kind of uninteresting. The water setting is just not that interesting to me, and I just don't really think it holds much weight because it's not even clear when the movie takes place or what made the ice caps melt, so it's not like The Road Warrior where it's clear that it's the not-too-distant future and that humans are responsible for their demise, which makes the story have a little more weight.

I think Waterworld got the most out of its setting/plot. The Postman pretty seriously wastes the setup and is just not that interesting. It's also wayyyy too fucking long.

In The Road Warrior, drought has spread due to global warming due to carbon emissions, in part due to burning gasoline which is seriously valuable in a future after Peak Oil. Although, Wikipedia says
>With supplies of petroleum nearly exhausted in the near future following a major energy crisis and a global nuclear war

In Waterworld, the ice caps have melted and the sea level has risen due to global warming due to carbon emissions, in part due to the burning of gasoline which is seriously valuable in a future after Peak Oil.

As for Peak Oil, see the 2004 book Crossing The Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil by Michael Ruppert, or see him in the documentary Collapse from 2009.

It's an unpopular opinion but The Postman was much better. The characters and plot were better. General Bethlehem stole the show. The postman himself was a much better lead role than the dude with gills on Waterworld.

I think The Postman influenced the Fallout games about as much as the original Mad Max movies.

Anyone else in the same boat? Everyone I've ever talked to likes Waterworld better, but to me it's not even a contest. Postman is better by a landslide.

I think the honest truth is most people have not seen The Postman, it came out around the same time, had a similar plot but it WASN'T the one with a small fortune dedicated on fake lakes and watercraft, so it didn't get the attention. When virtually everyone saw Waterworld because it was the highest budget movie ever at the time (and didn't remotely recover what it costed).

In my opinion, if you compare the Postman to the original Mad Max trilogy, I like it better. Though I'd have to say Fury Road was probably better than Postman.

I don't think it's a rip off, outside of both being post apocalyptic movies. The plot the Postman is a lot more than a standard action beat-em-up movie like Mad Max. The characters' interplay is intelligent, and though there is action, The Postman more of a dramatic movie.

And I like the Postman's likable con man character who would greatly prefer to avoid violence and drama over Mad Max where there is virtually no interplay between characters, just a lot of fights.

>>
>>82779498
Well, they mostly got shit because Keven Costner is not a very good actor, he has no range, and he can only play one character. His love scenes fall particularly flat.

Though honestly, both movies were pretty good barring Costner's wooden delivery.
>>
I wonder if they were just ahead of their time. I saw both of these movies for the first time on tv in post 9/11 america and I loved them.
>>
>>82779545

>>82779121
>I think The Postman influenced the Fallout games about as much as the original Mad Max movies.

Fallout came out September 30, 1997. The Postman came out December 12, 1997.

Maybe Postman influenced later Fallout games, I don't know, I've never played any.
>>

>Kevin Costner is not a very good actor, he has no range, and he can only play one character.

>I don't think it's a rip off

You're thinking a little too hard. They are both post-apocalyptic movies featuring a warrior nomad who shuns any type of society but who comes across a group of people trying to stand up to a tyrant. Both protagonists want nothing to do with the fight, and just want to keep on going on their own. Both eventually give in and agree to help, and both choose to take the fight to the antagonists in a way that allows the other people to escape.

The Postman is more "dramatic" in the sense that there is more dialogue and there is a love story. That does not make it a better movie.

I don't really care if you like The Postman more than The Road Warrior, because it's just an opinion, but you are trying too hard to be a contrarian by saying that The Postman is objectively a better movie.

I love these fucking movies. "Didn't you use to be famous?"
>>
>>82777089
i liked both of them

For real though how depressing would it be to live in Waterworld? Every morning you'd wake up with up with the floor beneath you either rotted a corroded a little bit more knowing that the moment it sprung a big enough leak that you and everyone else you ever knew would die.
>>
I remember when Waterworld was released(yea, I'm that old), everyone yelled :"most expensive movie of all times"!!!!

And then it was financial disaster and everyone proclaimed that movie was bad,
yet,it was an solid 6-7/10 post apoc flick, movie didn't looked expensive or epic, and that was guilt it carries from 90ies.
Maybe main problem was, you can see sea and you know, sea is blue, sky is blue.
Trying to turn it into sea Mad Max ruined pacing.
gills were an laugh tho, even then, where did

Postman is average movie, flick if you will.
Maybe good on paper as 3-4 pages long story but as a movie it has shortcomings, even if maybe most realistic post apocalyptic portrayal of world on film.

I don't get why the general Waterworld hate, I mean there's far worse shit around and it's a nice movie after all
maybe it depends on the fact that it costed a shitton, production had an infinte aount of problems, and it bombed hard at the time, but c'mon still a nice movie

I mentioned couple of posts up, movie carries guilt from the nineties.
It's not fault of the movie but Hollywood was really butthurt because they expected Titanic and got...well...Titanic.
Honestly, whole "bad movie" karma came from Hollywood and not movie fault.
They overspend on okish movie, they really could make it for half the money(in studio),but they wanted open waters,so they got them.

Loved Waterworld, top tier action adventure, and the woman in it had spectacular tits.

Would have been better with some more sea monsters, but thats just coz I like monsters, and CGI was young and rubbish back then

it wasn't a bomb, it was just expensive to make. it was profitable.

This is rarely talked about, but at the time that Waterworld was in production, and running heavily over budget, Universal Studios was in the process of being sold. Parent company MCA Inc was bought by the Seagram Company just after Waterworld wrapped production. Well, it bought 80% of it, but that gave it control of Universal.

However, Seagram was canny with the deal. Under the terms of it, MCA's previous owners, Matsushuita, agreed to hold on to $1bn of Universal's then debts. This isn't uncommon when one company buys another, but Seagram ensured that the production costs for Waterworld were mainly footed by Matsushuita. In fact, Seagram, and thus Universal, was only liable for spending that took place on the movie after June 5th 1995, when the deal went through. That, then, was the post-production expenses on the film. It's estimated that Universal, emerging under its new Seagram parent, ended up paying just $12m for Waterworld. The rest was effectively written off as part and parcel of a multi-billion dollar company takeover.

The Postman is postalkino
>>
Postman was fun
Waterworld was meh, but I enjoyed Postman
Never understood why these got so much hate. Postman has a cheesey-ness factor, but it's no worse than most stuff along similar dramatic lines
I always chalked it up to the budgets being too big

I read it after seeing the movie, and actually liked it less. All the cyborg supersoldier shit wasn't great, and seemed like a more generic story.

Based Tom Petty really elevated the film.
