I like the concept too. Having a competent future-savvy companion along with a more typical companion should work great, but it's amazing how rarely they try it. There's Zoe and Jamie, and then really nobody until Moffat Who.

Vicki and Steven rarely got used as future people. Romana was great, but as soon as they tried to pair her up with a less competent companion, we got Adric. Nyssa, they did sometimes try to use as science genius girl, but it usually felt like some B-plot tacked on to find something to do with Nyssa. Turlough and Peri might have worked if they'd given it a chance, but they didn't.

Even the novels and audios rarely pull it off. The closest is really Sam and Fitz, but Sam is just a normal present-day teenager who they turned into a super-assistant out of nowhere.

Thin Ice was built around the Doctor punching the racist guy. Dollard admitted to it. Except she's a hack, she's forced her views into the script but since she doesn't know how to write, the whole episode felt like a shop window for her political views. I'm not saying 12 punching a racist is bad, of course it isn't, but the ENTIRE episode is about racism. She doesn't give us a break.

Whereas competent writers like Moffat, Mathieson or Harness have enough intelligence to suggest political messages or outright even state them but in a clever way.

The entire episode is about the scene on the ice where Bill realises she can't save everyone and decides to save the kids, which calls back to the whole "how do you cope with people dying" conversation at the start.

Nope. Plus that's fucking retarded. Bill basically forgets about the dead kid mere minutes after he talks to her. Like she doesn't have the time to be outraged either? Why did she change her opinion so fast?

It wasn't forced down our throats. It was subtly hinted at, in Thin Ice you already know the guy's a racist and that's why he's acting like he is. Here we have a build up until the reveal, it's cleverly played and logical since we all know capitalists ever since the 19th century consider workers as replaceable tools with almost no value.

The entire reason they were in a hurry was that they didn't have much oxygen left.

The entire reason the miners were being killed was the oxygen credit.

The entire reason the TARDIS couldn't just extend its oxygen to cover them, which was the reason Bill ended up in a defective space suit, was the oxygen credit.

But yeah, other than that, it didn't have anything to do with the plot.

I'm not going to argue that the episode is good or anything, but the dude's racism was not actually relevant to the plot at all.

His rampant classism was though, seeing as how he's a caricature of wealthy individuals who were born into wealth and keep themselves wealthy by stamping out the poor.
>>
>>82742476
Hang on, I've just realised. You probably meant specifically the fact that the oxygen was measured in breaths right?
I thought you meant the idea of paying for oxygen in general. Because without that there's no story at all. But yeah I agree, the specific breaths thing didn't come into play at all. Maybe it was leading up to something in an earlier draft but got cut, or maybe it was just world building.

That's why I'm saying Dollard can't write. She made it all about his racism while it wasn't relevant to the plot at all.

And I'm pretty sure you don't actually need an account for downloads, only for audios (or if you want to participate in the discussions). But try it and make sure. Go to vk.com SLASH wall-5742320 and scroll down until you find a smallish PDF or CBR or whatever and click on it and see if it works.

If you do need an account, I believe they added an SMS verification requirement for registration at some point, but I'd bet those disposable shared SMS sites work.

Also, the very first time we see TARDISes being remote-controlled, in The War Games (when the Time Lords grab the Doctor's TARDIS, although we see it with the SIDRATs earlier in the story), they explain that doing so is damaging to the TARDIS, which is a pretty good reason not to do it every week.

Yes, and the Nazis knew it was better to terminate the suffering of the inferior races than to allow it to continue for generation after generation.

Isn't it sad to see a transgender person want to kill themselves every day for merely existing, or a crippled person in intense humiliating pain, or a homosexual who fails to fit in (aka >>82742732)? It's cruel that they have to exist.

Wiping out negative genetic traits such as birth defects would prevent suffering of thinking creatures for generations to come.

That's their moral compass. So, all positions against that are "unacceptable" and "Grounds for a beating" under the logic established by >>82742732. If you oppose Nazi moral compass, you deserve a beating.

I don't even know what we're arguing about. You can approach an objective morality by objectively evaluating actions with regards to altruistic principles. Tories are conservative in the sense in which the word has been used for decades in politics, all over the world. And in the sense that matches the dictionary definition.

Of course if you want to redefine the word to mean "stupid" instead of "conservative", you are free to do so, but nobody else is going to understand what you're talking about, or care enough to figure it out. And meanwhile, the majority of British society will continue to be conservative, and call itself conservative, and vote for the Conservative Party. Your trying to change the definition will not turn them all into idiots instead.
>>

Its odd how everybody is shitting on capitalism despite it being the fairest system to have ever existed. Under communism you get mass starvation and brutal authoritarian governments. Before that it was just serfdom, feudal lords and whatever tribal bullshit has existed. Capitalism is built on freedom, which is why the spread of capitalism is always followed by individual rights and democracy. It annoys me to see people endlessly shit on the system without providing any viable alternative.

>>
>>82743541
>Behaving selfishly is a suspension of morality.
You do realize that this is as subjective as opinions come, don't you? You're not actually declaring this as if you have any grand authority on what does and doesn't define morals right?

In general people care much more about their own survival than that of others, with the exception perhaps of their children.
Remember the guy who got dragged off the United Airlines flight? Remember all the people screaming "Oh noo how horrible oh my god don't do that this is wrong"? Did you see a single one of them volunteer to have their seat peacefully taken instead? Any of them could have done it at any time and ended that man's suffering, but they didn't. You don't actually believe these people cared about altruism, do you?

>Ruins of the State of the Art

Egypt, 31 May, 1279 BC. An upside down pyramid has appeared out of the sky as a gift for Rameses II's intronisation as the Pharaoh. The Doctor, Bill and Nardole materialise at the same time and start investigating people who went into the pyramid and never returned. Turns out this isn't really a pyramid, this is a hearse with thousands of souls waiting to rip the skin out of your body. The one target their king has is none other than Rameses, and his untimely death could change the entire history of humanity...

Conservatism is about preserving systems and institutions that work, from traditional schooling systems to the standards of civil discourse to the dignity of the monarchy. Demanding radical changes is not conservative, even if they're the exact opposite of the radical changes the left wants.

Meanwhile, I'm not even sure what you mean by "economically conservative". I know that's a term Americans use, but it seems to just be a synonym for "liberal", and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with conservatism.

He would be all angsty about it, saying it's an impossible choice. Then 5 seconds before, music starts blaring and he has a wide grin. The train passes harmlessly through those tied to the track, revealing itself to be hologram. The doctor then swaggers off to the TARDIS to go back in time and bribe national rail, removing all sense of moral weight
>>
>>82743689

It really isn't

>Objective morality

You believe in God or some other higher being that proscribes a moral code that everyone should abide by

>Subjective Morality

There's no such thing as good or evil because morality can be defined differently by different people and no particular moral code is superior to the other

If you believe in objective morals you follow whatever the holy book lays out, if you believe in subjective morals you desperately try to explain why murder is wrong without success
>>
>>82743598
Once you've agreed upon some basic foundations such as altruism, justice, wellbeing, happiness etc, then you engage in rational evidence-based discourse to find the most beneficial course of action in those respects. >>82743652
>You don't actually believe these people cared about altruism, do you?
I never claimed that people behave morally all the time. In fact it's your definition that implies this, since you're essentially defining it as the driving force behind all behavioural decisions, selfish or not. My definition excludes selfish or malicious behaviour, with the understanding that some people choose to behave immorally. I'm not sure your concept of morality even has room for such a thing as "immoral".
>>
>>82743850

Why does Doctor Who aspire to be so shit?
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjYxwo0GcpM&feature=youtu.be
>>
>>82743922
People believe in and adhere to their own moral code, in general. Sometimes their break their own code and, for example, steal even when they believe it's wrong, but they justify it by coming up with some excuse "eg I would have died if I didn't steal that bread" that overrides whatever their "normal" moral would be. Sometimes they might not be able to justify what they did as moral by their own standards too. It's not really important one way or the other.

Reminder its 10 mins longer because of the vault reveal.

Sources are calling it "the biggest twist since the invention of the twist"

The Doctor's secret has been described as 'VNA level dark'.

"When the vault opens, you're going to laugh, cry, and possibly shit yourself."

It's a real "drop your bacon" moment. "Count the knocks", says a show insider. 10 people who have seen the episode have died from shock at the reveal. So it's been cut from the press copies.

Doctor Who brings in the BBC a ton of money. They wouldn't sell the rights to anyone else. They could easily cancel the show, but there's no way they'd sell off the rights.

Not to mention, the BBC would get crucified by pretty much everyone. Did you see the outcry against the Great British Bake Off moving to Channel 4? Take that and multiply it by a thousand.

Yeah, she did. Tiny bit. Try to keep up.

thiis episode - very spookly!

>why the fuck did they think putting the picture of bill's mum next to bill as she was 'dying' was a good idea? It was tacky and distracting
Dude, those were Bill's last conscious thoughts as she was 'dying', there is literally nothing wrong with using a fade in to juxtapose an image of a character with what's going through their mind. I thought it was pretty intense.
>>
>>82747180
Yes she was. She had at least 3 love interests in a single series.
>>
>>82747259
list them
>>
>>82747244
her entire first episode was her trying to impress a man so she could finally marry him.
>>
I wonder if the topics in the conversation with Bill's date (e.g. feeling guilty, perhaps about blaspheming God by having a sinful tryst with someone of the same sex) might play into the episode indirectly? When Moffat writes one of his tentpole "kino" eps like Listen or Heaven Sent, he goes for thematic unity. It would be pretty interesting if the idea of guilt or sin is weaved into the plot with the Veritas somehow.

Lance Bennett, whom she stalked and pressured into marriage
Lee McAvoy, whom she married in the space of a single episode
Shaun Temple, whom she also married

this meme needs to die

>Lance Bennett, whom she stalked and pressured into marriage
That was not in the same series as the other two
>>
>>82747422
I doubt moff would tackle a concept like sin head on, it makes much more sense to just make a joke about the pope walking in on bill in the middle of a lesbian date and leaving it at that
>>
>>82747452
Please, it's still part of her character.
>>
>>82747486
But it's not what you said. Your point is wrong.
>>
>>82747540
She still has 2 men she marries in the same series. It's no better than Bill.
>>
>>82747444
Why is it a bad thing that other people find (and can elaborate on) poeticism, poignance, beauty, joy, and skilled craftsmanship in that episode, just because you personally are immune to it?
>>
>>82742269
The words did imply she was in physical danger.
>>
>>82747180
lol yes she did, constantly
>>
How come the forcefield didn't work in vacuum?
>>
>>82747180
She clearly did "All the good looking men are playing for the other team".

do you think Simm will get a Utopia-style regen into Missy, /who/?

Mathieson episode rankings.

Mummy > Flatline >>> Oxygen > The Girl Who Died

It wasn't strong enough. Generating a force field is harder/requires more energy than just using solid materials.

Great episode tho

That line was atrocious, I have no idea how it made it into the final script. It could've been a genuinely dramatic moment but they made it so corny.

I'm glad they're sticking with the blind thing though. Hopefully they don't back out of it too soon.
>>
Mathieson is overhyped. Mummy and Flatline are fresh and good, but everything else was fucking shit so these two looked better in comparison
>>
>>82748467
Exactly. His stuff's only good because everything since Capaldi's run began has been no fun and dull.

Mummy's action scenes were pretty original and cool on their own, though.

It's the end but the moment has been prepared for:
