That's why I loved Manchester by the Sea.
No on screen text announcing a different timeframe, no difference in color grading etc, Lonergan has faith that the viewer is not an actual retard and uses the right cuts in editing for it to completely make sense in the narrative.
I absolutely hate the usual sepia/blurry color grade when a film shows the past with the fucking date in the lower right corner, so fucking lazy.
Throw in a cheesy harp transitional sound effect inbetween the cuts and we have a proper bottom of the barrel flick.
