Weird for the sake of being weird, to freak out the squares and hide the fact there's no actual depth to it.

Opaque imagery to hide lack of meaning is a defining feature of modern art. Obviously >>82696749 covers the basic themes but you really can't look too closely at the details.

God damn Rabbits is amazing
fear of fatherhood

It's all about feelings. I'd personally wouldn't look for any symbolism behind say his dream about becoming eraser. It's just an emotianal piece from Lynch to portray the way he felt when he got his daughter: fucked up, lost, confused and lonely.

Word of god is that there has never been a person who will figure it out and never will be, probably because there literally is no meaning.

Eraserhead is an Instinct Film made in the tradition of German Expressionism.
Warning Shadows is a good example of this genre.

I don't know if there's an actual narrative or hidden meaning behind Rabbits but there's some thematic subtext there.
A subversion of Sitcoms, for example, which it's obviously meant to resemble visually. A good sitcom live off of its witty writing, where every line of dialogue "connects" to its replay in a snappy, well timed way. In Rabbits you get the complete opposite where nothing that is said seems to relate to anything said before and the laugh tracks come at what seem to be completely arbitrary points.
