Anyone can match a still photo with a raytracer. Its not exactly rocket science. The trick is doing it in motion, which is exactly where it completely falls apart and doesnt look realistic at all

Especially when you have the actor's head to laser-scan or do photogrammetry with, it's not really hard at all to create photo-realistic renders

Combining it with motion and dynamic lighting is where things get costly if you want to do it right. And usually fails

The top one is good, but the bottom one you can tell by looking at the eyes, lips, and jawlines. Honestly, the ones they had recently in rogue one were almost perfect until they started talking, and then it was in uncanny valley territory.
