I'm not gonna sit here and debate you, but S1 and S3 are closer to the setting of the movie, while S2 strayed off quite a bit from that Fargo feel. That's objective.

It is, and it's part of what makes season 2 so good.

Season 1 tries to be the most like the movie, and is the worst off for it, because the elemnts that are changed from the movie don't gel as well.

The movie's greatest strength comes from feeling incredibly realistic and down to earth. It never feels pretty or made up, like a genuinely honest depiction of events. That's what makes it so good, that's the point of the opening sprawl.

Season 1 immediately breaks that tone though with stuff like Lorne Malvo and the super hitman story and the fish raining from the sky and stuff like that. The plot is much more dramatic and convoluted. This shatter the feeling of a realistic, honestly presented, true story. The show is at odds with itself thematically.

Season 2 abandoned the style and setting of the movie for something that fit the established tone and style of the show more appropriately. It's more consistent. It also has better pacing, a large cast of well balanced, equally likable characters, each being as sympathetic as they were supposed to be, better direction, and a more well put-together story.
