Explain this show to me. I don't see the appeal.

If you don't immediately see this show for the Renaissance art it is you're a pleb not worth talking to.

It takes all the convention you would expect from the story and turns it on its head. The pope is traditional conservative in his views on things like abortion and homosexuality which runs opposite what the average viewer would expect. Because he's the protagonist and so god damn charismatic it almost forces the viewer to cheer for him even though what he stands for is considered bad. And that's just the pope. The main rival antagonist wishes to see the church go into a more liberal modern setting. It also approaches the subject of the Vatican and religion with a seriousness that's not often seen in all other depictions. It keeps the mysticism without being preachy or at the opposite spectrum condescending. Well made and well executed

You were right not to be misled by the style. It's an inconsistent show without soul or character. Not caring about it is a sign of intelligence.

Shitlord Pope BTFO's pedophiles, liberation theologists, and globalists.
I dropped out after the fifth episode. I think it's good tv, but it wasn't for me.

Maybe drama isn't quite your speed, OP.

Except he changed his mind at the end and became more liberal, they basically told you he was conservative because he hated his hippy parents who abandoned him

Conservatism was a means to an end, not a sincere political affiliation. He just wanted the church to be the way it used to, closed off and mysterious but still beloved
