Alright, I have to ask, is the show's intention to make you sympathize with Hannah? Because I'm about halfway through the show and she's the most unlikeable protagonist you could ask for. He also should have never let her leave the office without enacting a "plan of action," again something considered ethically mandatory under American school counselor guidelines. Plans of action vary, but typically involve things like

-Asking the teen to promise that they won't hurt themselves within a specific time frame
-Setting up a future meeting to give the teen a future date that they feel obligated to live by
-Telling the teen that there are resources that can help them and if possible giving them those resources to look over (business cards of local counselors, that sort of thing)

Mr. Porter sucks at his job. The only thing I'll give him credit for is that he put his cell phone away and didn't answer the phone while Hannah was in the room, but letting a teenager who just said a bunch of things that raise suicide risk red flags and indicated something had happened to her leave was monumentally stupid and ethically (if not, depending on the state, legally) wrong.

Anyone else think this? I happened to rewatch an episode and I originally missed a part where Tony tells Clay that the parents didn't have services for Hannah.

Yeah that's what gets me too, it's actually a power fantasy (to steal terms from groups of people who usually annoy me) about suicide, and a lot of kids think like that I think. I was never suicidal but when I was in my teens I used to wonder about what people would say at my funeral if I died tomorrow or whatever, and 'I wish I was dead!' is a go-to line for angsty teens.

I feel like with subject matter like this, you really have to hit the nail on the head and get it all right, because if you fuck up and mischaracterise the act, which imo they did, then you invalidate it for genuine sufferers of these conditions and ideations.

The people I knew who killed themselves in their teens did it over cumulative things - one girl had a really shitty home life, and the guy at the next school over did it after being rejected by a girl whose kid he'd basically unofficially adopted after a relatively long relationship and she cut him right out of that - from what I told he basically felt like he'd had his own kid taken away, and adult men don't even cope with that we'll, let alone a volatile 18 year old (yes, degenerate teen pregnancies were semi-frequent in my home town). I can see another coming too, but I don't think there's much I can do, and the suicide survivor I know has struggled with mental health issues since childhood too.

Should note that I'm from a small town and I only heard of some of these because our schools talked about it at the time, I don't personally know this many people with messed up lives, but all of them attempted suicide to end their misery, and I doubt any of them would identify with Hannah.

Why make it a serious teen drama about rape and suicide if it's just supposed to be fun? And if you're going to do that, you have to be mindful that you're still going to be sending messages to your audience, even if there isn't a goal agenda to push.
