What if Christopher Nolan was approached to take on the DC Cinematic Universe back in 2004 beginning with the Batman reboot? He looks for the hottest, most fearless directors and plan their films, after TDK, they let the Nolans handpick Villeneuve, Fincher to work on a grounded approach Superman story set in The Dark Knight's world.

You can't ground Superman.
Superman cannot be filmed successfully now because you have to love America and love people to believe in Superman, and nobody can do both right now. When people have got some self-discipline and self-respect again, Superman will be possible. He has to be unironic, bright, loving, and with trunks intact.

Because Heath Ledger died and Nolan didn't even want to make it without him, but he signed the whole trilogy with the studio so he had to make it one way or another so the whole film is somewhat half-assed
