Consumers don't just wake up one day and suddenly want something. That's the wrong way around. They are gradually exposed to something and then want more of it, or not.

That's the only thing I find interesting about Alan Moore that in his Watchmen universe, pirates have the cultural statues that superheroes have in ours. It's a form of discourse that escapism will be sold to us no matter what. And when that is switched up to an extreme you get dolls of your favourite characters, cartoon pillows, busts of helmets, sword replicas. The more a company can sell you into that escapism to keep your from having your own adventures and instead enjoy watching it, the more you butter their toast.
