You don't need to fully develop a character's backstory to make them interesting. I'm tired of writers trying to fully develop every single character without realizing the value of enigma and carefully planned exposition.
Imagine if they made a movie about Anton Chigurh's terrible childhood and traumatic experiences which lead him to become the hitman we see in No Country.
Or, if you want a real example, take a look at the Hannibal Lecter prequel and how much it ruined the character's image.
