I'm not even being anti semitic here. This guy was clearly a racist Jewish caricature. He was always the evil guy in the background pulling the strings, manipulating people with his limitless supply of money and fucking over anyone who wasn't wearing pink socks like himself

What is this movie even about? Is she actually possessed?

Isn't it strange how when you read rave reviews for this movie, you see a sizable portion portion, if not most of it devoted to how realistically it portrays a couple fighting, even though that's such a minor part of the movie by the end of it, almost like reviewers want to don't want to negatively rate this movie by giving the impression they didn't get it, so they pretend to like it and talk about what they actually understood and appreciated?

Just something I noticed. Really makes me think, though.
>>
>>82480059
>No she wasn't this movie is about divorce.
More like the first half-hour. Then it go way out there.
>>
>>82480418
This should be, "give the impression they didn't get it by negatively rating the movie."
>>
>>82480447
I think im gonna rewatch the movie, but here is the important question.

Is this the best film of Isabelle Adjani?
>>
>>82480418
>portrays a couple fighting
its the main theme of the movie, fantastic elements only serve to highten it, and the interactions between Adjani and Neill are the best part. Of course reviewers should remark it.
>>
>>82480586
>fantastic elements only serve to highten it
Then that contradicts what I said, which was how realistically the movie portrayed it, which wouldn't apply to the fantastic elements, (if even that's what they represent). I didn't imply they shouldn't remark upon, but spend so much time on the realistic scenes of their quarrel, which only takes up half an hour, and the rest is like is abstract horror and suspense, with some drama thrown in.

Did you feel like you "got it" though? What was the ending about if taken literally?
It seemed to me like it was about the coming of the Antichrist. People explain away the movie as "a metaphor for divorce" and I can definitely see that, but there's still an actual plot to it beyond that; it's not all just a metaphor. There are dopplegangers and monsters and nuclear holocausts and shit
>>
>>82480663
>What was the ending about if taken literally?
Why are you asking me? I was just talking about how reviews approached the movie.
>>
>>82480526
Well, I love Polanski's The Tenant, but she was barely in it; same for Walter Hill's Driver.
Possession is her most extreme acting, and that's what makes the movie work.
My favourite movie of her is Queen Margot, without doubt.
>>
>>82480714
I thought you might know, since you were commenting on how all the reviewers didn't seem to get it
>>
>>82480641
You could make almost the same movie about a wife leaving his husband for her lover.
Making the husband a James Bondish spy that has to fight an interdimensional octopus, takes things to a weirder nightmarish level, but the feelings behind it are still the same.
>>
>>82480775
I'm not going to speak about what the movie actually means. It's just somebody could read those reviews, think this "realistic" quarrel takes up a large portion of the movie, and then after half-an-hour later, you're watching scenes that could only metaphorically connected to a couple fighting, and rather tenuously at that.
>>
>>82480809
>but the feelings behind it are still the same.
But you can't call it "realistic" at that point, and then there are some parts of the film that would have no comprehensible connection whatsoever to couples fighting that seem to be there because they're creepy, or whatever.

To show that the main characters are trapped and that there is no escaping from (((them))). The movie gave the impression that the pink socks were behind everything. That guy who looked like David Kleinfeld was right behind the East Berlin police at the end, as though directing them
>>
>>82481452
Then who was behind the tentacle monster or was it her imagination?
>>
>>82481514
The entire movie, (or the parts that were surreal), were just dream sequences. lmao, did you actually think any of that happened, or that it would be more plausible squid monsters would exist than it being something she dreamed? Used logic, man.
>>
>>82481514
Didn't the two private eyes see it too? Her husband too?
It's definitely a weird movie. It's more than worth about the acting though which is enjoyable to say the least.
Also, the scene that confused me the most must have been the conversation with the mother.
>>
>>82476778
10/10 acting. now i need to see this film
>>
>>82481409
>>82481514
I think the monster was supposed to be the Antichrist, but all we know for sure is that he is an extremely evil doppelganger-abomination of Sam Niell's character, Mark. The monster seemed to be able to control their minds, like when Mark saw it he suddenly became just as devoted to protecting it and "finishing" it as his insane wife was for the whole movie. And once it finally was complete there was suddenly an Armageddon scenario

it was all real, nothing was in anyone's imagination or dreams. It was just supernatural and not really explained, like cosmic horror. The monster was ultimately behind everything, as it was controlling people's minds, but it was the Pink Socks that created the circumstances that made the monster appear.
>>
>>82482094
That was actually sarcasm, but I really hate when people think it's acceptable to explain away elements in films by, "it was a dream," and the narrative doesn't imply anywhere that it was a dream, so it's basically an explanation you're concocting to explain away parts of the film you don't get, whether it's the fault of the film or not.
>>
>>82476778
