last time (2009?) there were articles about how seth macfarlane was supportive of the strike even though he's a producer (management in this situation) as well as a writer

Simpsons is definitely writer's guild, although they weren't during the 90s. that's why David X Cohen was able to go by his real middle initial "S" during his time on the Simpsons.

Futurama was writer's guild, and there was already a David S. Cohen, so he had to pick a different middle initial, and picked X because it sounded futuristic.

futurama ended years ago and isn't coming back, so i can't really connect it to the strike that just happened

Writers get paid peanuts as it is because competition is so high and it's an easy job. With traditional revenues dropping the traditional tv writer becomes less valuable. They want gibs as a show of good faith.
