It made a lot of money, but Japan doesn't seem to hop on the sequel train just because of success. Instead, they try broadening the IP so they can milk it from different angles. That's why you get accompanying video-games, OVAs, figures, etc. We're already getting that Godzilla anime, which is honestly more interesting to me than if someone other than Anno made a sequel to Shin Gojira.
