Wow. Just went to go see this high and it was actually fucking amazing. I thought my favorite movie series was the captain America but it honestly might be guardians of the galaxy now. Amazing emotional plot full of well placed comedic relief. Not to mention the mind blowing CGI. 9.5/10
>>
I agree and I am not OP again.
Jokes were well timed and moderate. All characters got developed and got the necessary screentime. The universe as a whole was expanded to "marvel" ( :) ) the audience.

Can this also be a Rocket appreciation thread? I'm surprised they made him even hotter in the sequel. unf!
>>
The only reason why critics gave Guardians bad reviews was because they're just getting sick of Marvel Movies. The rest is just nitpicking.
>>
Was it supposed to be cliche and predictable?

Did anybody else feel as if they kinda flanderized some of the characters in this one? Drax in particular feels noticeably more over-the-top this time around.
>>
>>82437717
No. Because in the previous movie none of the characters that were important beyond Starlord had any defined personality, if at all.

I have no idea why people think the first movie was better when the characters and their interactions were so fucking awkward.
>>
>>82437762
GOTG uses basic character archetypes, not the same as not having any personality
>>
>>82437913
Yes it does. Basic character archetypes that aren't fleshed out are boring. Drax and Gamora barely had any defining characteristics that personalizes them as people, and Rocket and Groot weren't fleshed out. The only main character that was an actual person was Starlord. GotG 2 fleshes out characters that didn't have character in the previous movie. There's no flanderization because there was barely anything to flanderize.

Real federalization would be the Guardians comics inspired by the movies, completely misunderstanding the way in which the movies are inspired by the comics, adopting the most well-known superficial characteristics without trying to find out what they're supposed to represent.

This is why DC conquers all. This is why Wonder Women will re-open the mighty wrath that is DC and finally who all you Marvel fanboys that it is NOT as bad as you say it is, but you are in fact unintellectual and cannot perceive what is happening on the screen. Still think BvS was bad? How blind are you? These were comics first, with even dumber plotlines, yet you knock LIVE ACTION TELLINGS of Superman Vs. Batman? Get fucking real. I can't wait for DC to come back and kick you Marvel cucks right in the fucking uterus.
>>
>>82435180
OP, completely agree. LOVED IT! Really felt that Gunn achieved that Fifth Element vibe that he missed with the first one which felt forced with a shitty villain.

FUCKING GORGEOUS cinematography, funny, heartfelt, yeah, I really enjoyed it and will be buying it on Bluray.

My only regret is that Gunn isn't doing Infinity War because the Russo's and their washed out shaky cam bullshit can get fucked!!!FACT!!!

Just got home from it. Liked it. Laughed quite a bit, especially at Drax. But the plot felt too neat, like a video game: here's a problem, and here's a solution. Next problem, another solution. Quite a few jokes fell flat in my theater. Not complaining much, but I loved the first one so much, it was a step down for me. 7/10 still decent entertainment.

Honestly, I thought the movie was pretty mediocre throughout. The girl I went to see it with thought the same.

There were many lines that felt either squandered or just poorly written/out of place. Also many scenes dragged on for like 3-4 minuets longer than they needed to, like the punchline would be evident within the first minute or two of conversation then they would just beat the joke to death for 5 more minutes.

Soundtrack was good, I actually really liked Michael Rooker this time around and thought he did a great job finishing up Yondu's story, and I enjoyed Kurt Russell even if he was given some shitty lines to work with.

I didn't really mind Drax being super happy all the time because of the context of the narrative.

In the first movie he was on an incredibly personal quest, to say nothing of being alone and not liking or trusting the rest of the gang for most of the film.
In Vol. 2 he's just hanging out with his family and having a good time for 90% of it, and his mood kind of reflects that. It will be a problem if when they're confronting/going after Thanos he doesn't go back to being a murder hobo at least a little.

No, he was supposed to have some background posters in the Earth scene.

I think people are just bored of them being reasonably good (you know, at least technically and structurally) so consistently that the bar has been raised.

People prefer to root for the underdog, and Marvel/Disney hasn't been the underdog for 4 or 5 years.

I really really really enjoyed the intro credits scene. I was expecting a retread of the first one, except with everyone dancing except Drax stubbornly refusing to. I thought it was a very creative way to bring people back into the kind of fun the 1st volume was.

Reposting from the other thread shitting on the movie:

It's humor and 'quirkyness' was really too overblown, making even fucking Deadpool look tame at time.

It's still not the worst Marvel movie yet. Certainly the most cheesy and silly, yes. That said, surprisingly, it has some decent character moments in the second half. Oh and Ego? I fucking loved Ego if only because as far as dumb villain plans his, if you ask my very subjective opinion, was one which motivation made sense no matter how twisted it was:

>my life, my love and my lady is the sea
I'm not going to pretend Ego is a deep villain or anything deep ever really exist in Marvel movies but bear with me. MCU Ego's thing is that he is alone. Ego is all there is to Ego because he's the only entity of his type which he knows. And the goal of life is to spread and procreate. Ego may come off as a dick on a personal level but if we're talking on a cosmic scale, he's merely trying to make more of himself. He's following the imperative of life. Plus there is the implication that, had Peter followed him willingly he wouldn't have hooked him up as a battery but most likely nurtured him to become a full-fledged second Ego. I'm not saying it's 10/10 villain or that Marvel really made anything deep with him. All I'm saying is that in a franchise filled with boring villains he's been one of the more interesting ones so far.

Kek , let me break it down for you DCuck.
DC needs a string of good movies to even be in the conversation of what's the best cinematic universe.
If the DCEU finally releases a movie that isn't complete shit like their past movies, then that's the first step. They have to keep making decent movies for a few years after they finally release a decent movie to even be in the same conversation.

>>
I liked it better than the first one, but I didn't really like the first one all that much.

It was a comedy, not an action movie. But that's alright, Hollywood hardly ever makes comedies anymore so if capecomedy is the new comedy that's fine with me. Nothing wrong with people going to the theater with friends and laughing and having a good time. The cast is great, jokes were hit or miss but there were so many that was okay too, the visuals were phenomenal, probably the most colorful MCU movie ever. It's like all the color that DC drained out of MoS and BvS ended up here. Effects were great. Good villain.

Really just another hit from the MCU, but they are like Murderers' Row at this point; it's always going to be a hit, just a matter of how big.

Way too many jokes, the only really emotional moment in the whole movie was when Drax was talking about his dead wife and Mantis felt him and started crying, every other "emotional" moment felt forced as fuck and way too implicit

Now i know why Dave Bautista didn't like the directing his character was taking

This movie had a huge potential but failed drastically due to overuse of jokes. They obviously know "people loved how funny the Guardians are, we shoulde make it EVEN FUNNIER" and went full retarded instead of just keeping the tone stable throughout the movie

Drax had so much potential. I actually can't believe the only character i really liked in the movie was Gamora.

>>
>>82452092

The first like fifteen minutes or so I thought was bad, I was getting very nervous. The opening with Groot dancing really overstayed its fucking welcome, then Drax and Rocket are making like poopy jokes and shit.

Once the team splits up the quality improved drastically I thought, the jokes started to actually land and there were some really badass moments with Yondu, Rocket and Gamora. Also some really nice character moments, like Drax/Mantis in front of the pond, Peter/Gamora on Ego and Rocket/Yondu. It felt more character-focused than the first movie, basically every character got an emotional scene for the actors to show their teeth.

Overall I liked it, besides the first ten/fifteen minutes. Probably like a 7.5/10, whereas the first movie would be around 8.5/10.

I'll accept that, firm borders are boring.

So what about him running into other celestial beings? What, he's the only current living one and has been for millions of years? Why is his whole thing that he ran into basic ass mortals that don't resemble him. Why didn't he go to Thor's planet and chill with those dudes at all? Why didn't he find Thanos?

It just makes his millions-of-years-old god seem like a short-sighted child. His brain alone is bigger than the bodies of other mortals but he's written like some 15 year old retard. Doesn't really carry that sense of power and scope of existence in any facet other than maybe that sweet beard.

At least Apocalypse in X-Men had some kind of "I'm way older and bigger and stronger than all you fools and your shit" sort of edge to his performance, even if it and the rest of the movie was cheesy schlock.
>>
>>82455481
Celestials aren't as well fleshed out in the MCU as they are in the comics. Could be that he's the only living Celestial. Could be that he was broken so bad that he can't recognize other celestials as being similar to him. He was just a floating brain that formed a planet, didn't have his big suit/ship that all other celestials are contained in in the comics. Or he could just think he's a celestial, since the ruins of their bodies around the galaxy are the only thing he can compare himself to.

I wish they didn't killed kurt russel so he can job to Thanos when infinity wars hit.

I thought the movie was good. Soundtrack was on par with the first. The plot was certainly a little messy, but the characters made up for it. Drax was amazing. Yondu was amazing. Baby Groot got old, I really didn't care for the ravager ship scene or the button scene. The final fight was kinda strange for me, I feel like Ego should have had more power over his planet, but it might be just because he's using his brain and not his heart or some cheesy shit like that. Pretty fun movie overall.

How did Ego model himself after humans before he'd even discovered other existing life?
>>
>>82460317

The movie relentlessly mashed inherently opposed tones into single scenes, the most notable one being Starlord and Ego's bonding scene. Between the music, the slow motion, the goofy ass facial expressions, and the simplicity of the scene, a lot of people struggled to see if it was a sincere moment or drowning in its own irony. It was both, and the movie purposefully does this again and again. Gags appear where they shouldnt, and sincerity pops up where you don't expect it.

There are two pivotal moments where the jokes stop and the movie takes on a heartfelt earnestness. They come towards the end and revolve around Yondu and his old gang. Because the movie has refused the audience any chance at a maintained atmosphere beforehand, these moments stand out and achieve weight. For that they're more effective.

I'm not big on Disney's output, especially not most of Marvel's, but I think this movie achieved having its own personality while momentarily snubbing the dull Avengers camp it will eventually have to join.

It's not perfect, but it does have its moments, and the ways it achieves them is far more unexpected, and therefore engaging, than what has come before it within the Marvel context.

I liked it a lot, and was pretty lukewarm on the first one. I'd say check it out if you get the chance and decide for yourself.
>>
As someone who doesn't watch many movies, I could see practically every scene coming a mile away. The exception being the last scene with the fireworks show which came out of the blue.
The CG goes from something that looks straight out of 2002 to shit that probably took thousands of Koreans to make, and its jarring to see actors on actual sets then seeing them waving their hands around like lunatics on an obvious green screen.

The blue guy. In context, that character has revealed a lot about his past, and the scene preceding it has a heart to heart between him and Starlord. Out of context, it's a funny one off gag. Within the movie, it's banter between two characters who clearly care for each other and becomes endearing.

My two pennies.

it has much, much less to do with the camera used (all films shoot in log or cinestyle or something similar, google it cause I don't feel like explaining) but basically whatever look the film has - deep colors, washed out bullshit, everything gross blue (JP world) is handled in post production in the color correction process. the camera can give you more room for it, but it's a decision handled after a film has been shot.

Yes, until the tumour. That's the part that is rather poorly written. Either that or Ego is really that much of an alien being lacking empathy but I think the implication here is that this is the moment he crossed the line. He had to choose between his great cosmic plan or staying with one mortal, maybe get attached to her and his son too much with no garantee said son would be a proto-celestial.

He chose. And he chose what to us is morally reprehensible. But to an alien being which is functionally immortal, what is killing someone from a sickness and them dying naturally a few decades later? Granted, I would have preferred that Ego gave her that tumour as a side-effect of him sticking his dick (which he does have, as the movie remind us with a really crass joke) into her to make Star Lord.

Iirc, in comics (or at least one continuity, I'm not 100% sure), Celestials are born inside planets so maybe Ego, if he IS a Celestial (and not just a self-proclaimed one) is some sort of 'orphaned celestial' of some kind, left to drift in space until he made his own body rather than being implanted into one.

This movie doesn't pretend to be something its not, and actually made with heart -- the only franchise from the disney capeshit factor that isnt seen as just a job/product. Great themes, the perfect mix of accessibility and nerd shit, and felt more of its own universe apart from the MCU. I tend to like DC more, but GotG is the exception. A diamond in the rough.

It's hard to fault cause it's still a good scene, but it makes no sense why Yondu had to die.

In Vol.1 Gamora and Quill both survive exposure to open space. Going into space with nothing but his helmet seems to be a pretty regular maneuver for Quill. Was it cause Ego's core was being destroyed? I don't think Starlord being unable to access the light would negate something he's just biologically able to do. There is no "ahhh... i'm losing the power" scene. All Yondu had to do was put on the suit himself and haul ass. Or trade off the space suit until they got picked up.

I feel like they anticipated this and spent a lot of time retconning what happens to people in space in this movie, showing all the mutinied crew puffing up in space.

It just sucked, I loved Rooker and his performance, meanwhile the math didn't really add up.

It wasn't open space. They were in Knowhere's rarified/nebulous atmosphere, so they could survive for a bit.
>>
>>82464932
>>82465061
Yondu was also in space for much longer than either of them in the first movie.
>>

Low Ego Orbit then? He seemed to be talking pretty easily.
>>

I agree with this. I also think that this contributes to "mainstream" reviewers starting to look for more faults and negative criticisms, as online you start to see the collective opinions of audiences influence discourse about Marvel/DC.

Something which is pretty technically/structurally competent like GotG Vol.2 is an easy target for soft negative criticisms, to score the reviewers "critic points"

>Ego impregnates woman
>implants tumor in her head after she gives birth
>tumor kills them after several years
>Yondu takes the child to Ego
>child fails to live up to Ego's expectations and is killed
>repeat for seventy years

Peter might have just been able to serve Ego's purpose by dint of being an adult when he met his father.

Or, y'know, maybe having a handful of good scenes in a two hour film isn't enough to carry the shitty plot and boring characters.

I liked GotG 2 but let's not fucking pretend it's high art. It's competent, and that's the best that can be said.

Most of the people here aren't pretending it's true kino, but it's definitely capekino. It's a stupid, fun movie with some great scenes.
>>
>>82465829
I don't think that "soft negative criticisms to score reviewers critic points" are the only criticisms that can be made of capekino.

Given that most "aliens" are just different colored humanoids in the MCU, or exactly Human looking, it's not exactly a big deal.
>>
>>82464678
Was the audience full of Americans?

>>82466187
Of course.

Gamora has body modifications and Star-Lord is half Celestial. A normal human wouldn't have survived as long as he did, and presumably neither would a Kree.
>>
>>82466045
Are there any films or tv series that feature large numbers of different alien species that aren't mostly humanoid?

Which is precisely what he said, silly bollocks.

Farscape is probably the only one that comes close.
>>
>>82466371
Babylon 5 had mantis people (a puppet that appeared only a few times) and the two most powerful races were both nonhumanoid. The Shadows looked liked spidertaurs and the Vorlons were energy beings who went around in encounter suits and could make you perceive them as angels (or whatnot).

Original guy here. I'm not saying that either. I'm saying that audience and YouTube/blog review discourse in the online sphere has influenced mainstream critics.

There are plenty of different criticisms to be made of comic book stuff. But like the guy I replied to >>82445722, I agree in that the bar has been set at a particular level for a while, and quite consistently. As more of this marvel stuff has come out, you've generally had to look elsewhere for harsher reviews - Age of Ultron got mostly praised in the mainstream and it's not that good.

I'm saying the mainstream critics are "catching up" with their independent counterparts a little, and that's where the
"soft negative criticisms to score reviewers critic points" is coming from.

I really enjoy Marvel Studios' output for the most part, I'm not a DC fan saying "paid for reviews!!" - I'm just saying public/online discourse has been influencing the state of things.

Why did this movie decide that trying to copy the first movie's formula of 20 slow motion walk scenes, lock and load montages, and pose-offs was a good idea?
>>
>>82460847
Pretty sure he just modelled himself on his idea of what a perfect lifeform would look like. Every sentient race in MCU is more or less a person in prosthetics or with silly colored skin anyway so it isnt a stretch to imagine he just picked the standard and rolled the dice and came out looking human.

So is Yondu's first mate going to be part of the Guardians or was the credit scene just a gag?

Why is life suffering?

Also did anyone else see it in a theater with a dead quiet audience barely laughing at the jokes?

I marked the fuck out in the post-credits scene with "Adam" because I thought it was teasing Terrigen when she said "created life" and then when she said Adam I thought it was Adam Bllackveil and the gold people were supposed to be Ex Nihilo and the Gardeners but it was just a shitty fan service for Adam Warlock
>>
>>82467282
I don't think it's just fan service. Gunn has said he'll be part of the Marvel cosmic universe in the future, probably in Vol. 3 which he's already writing.

To be honest, I only wanna see Infinity War for the GotG
>>
So how are they gonna beat Thanos in Infinity War? I'd like to see them set up the Inhumans beforehand and they could introduce Thane, otherwise it should be Nebula who forms the team to kill him like in the ongoing.
>>
>>82464932
Gamora was dying during her open space trip. That's why Peter gave her his mask. Without it, she'd have been as much toast as Yondu. And thanks to GotG2 we learned that Peter, at the time of GotG1 war basically an immortal demigod, so his space trip wouldn't have killed him, no matter what, though he didn't know it at the time. Makes perfect sense.

>or Ego is really that much of an alien being lacking empathy
>Ego
You rode the short bus to school, huh
>>
>>82467677
Not necessarily. Ego said he had to return to his home periodically or he'd die, or at least his avatar would. Since Pete doesn't have a planet body to fall back on he was as mortal in GOTG 1 as anyone.
>>
>>82468247
Ego himself said that surviving holding an Infinity Stone was a clear indicator for Quill having godly properties. What's a bit of exposition to open space, compared to that?
