Why'd he call them Hobbits and not just Halflings?

I mean Hobbit hasn't really caught on has it? I guess it's copyrighted and all, but in every RPG setting they're simply halflings and not hobbits. It's such a stupid term.

Tolkien existed before RPG settings, and that was just the name he made up for them. They are called halflings by humans in a few instances in the trilogy though

I know the actors aren't the tallest of the group, but look at OP's picture for example.
