Good lord, it's because you didn't fucking get it. The opening scene there's a swarm of insects, and at the ending scene there's the bird who eats an insect and everybody thinks it's a good ending because he killed 1 insect, when there's the whole swarm. It's also a metaphor for the USA at the time, you try to make someone your enemy, you kill it and everybody thinks it's perfect. Not even mentioning the human masochism that the film implies in a brilliant way.

It is a masterpiece though. 4 strong characters, not to mention it's shocking, memorable, suspenseful and intriguing.
