The aesthetic is not nearly as striking. Roland is the classic gunslinger archetype. If he were younger it'd be Clint Eastwood in the role. Elba doesn't bring that vibe, he's lost the classic western gunslinger design and become a generic sci-fantasy young adult leather clad hero.

Stephen King is a broken man

He's British to the point he can't keep up accents before falling into his natural one and whereas Roland in the books is meant to be the quintessential cowboy, described multiple times as looking like a mix of Clint Eastwood and King himself.

I've spotted some similarities from the book - I think the massacre of tull is in it, but the ugly guy that kidnapped jake in lud took him in tull and roland shot him right away.
if it's another cycle and not the one of the books I'm just going to accept the movie as it is, as long as the core elements of the story are in there.

the only complaint that I really have is that jake seems to try to convince roland to go to the tower. that shouldn't need motivation, like at all

I've read the books and most of kings writing on them. It's weird to have Elba play Roland because the story is based on European folklore and is heavily influenced by spaghetti westerns. Then there's a huge part of the second and third books which focuses on Odetta's experience as a black woman in America in the 80s and as a child. There's a passage where her dentist dad tries to hail a taxi and it blows right past him because he's black and he tries to make the best of it by saying hey it's a nice day anyway let's just walk. And it's honestly affecting idk. King makes a rare good metaphor about capped teeth being like racism getting plastered over by society in the past. It's a great segment of the books. And it's just weird. A crippled black woman accompanying a young heroin addict and a gun slinging descendant of king Arthur on a quest to save the beams that hold up the dark tower. The incongruity of the characters somehow makes it more believable. You're not just messing with Roland you're messing with odetta too. Changing both characters. Not to mention Gilead they'll either all be black or Roland's family will somehow be the leaders of an otherwise white kingdom (?) Or they'll be mixed which is also at odds with the books. It makes no sense from a story telling perspective. I'll still watch the movie though. I like iris elba.

that was my first concern, but this concerns me more: jake has already been through the gate of the old house, that happened in book 3. jake was supposed to die by the hand of jake mort and then wake up at the way station. there's no eddie or susannah/o/detta in sight.
but I would hate to see detta gone. she gave some spice to susannah and the backstory of odetta is, as you said, really intriguing.

It's not Elba that's got me worried it's everything else that does
