It is the only show with a majority minority cast to achieve such a perfect score

I guess it's a (((good))) show.

as if anyone on netflix would even say anything negative about a black movie
>>

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but so far I think it's pretty good. It's not even all pro-black, it's actually quite balanced and differentiated if you are willing to see that.

And the female lead is hot

It doesn't matter if it is 'good' or not or whether it is evenhanded or whether it is on point.

This anti-white racialist viewpoint is so 2016. She lost. I'm not interested in a critique of these people. They are for the dustbin now.

its funny that they cal the show dear white people and the tag line is "bet you think this show is about you"
why are these people so fucking terrible

RT likes it so it's almost certainly garbage.

BTW what's with all the shilling about it?
Do they hope to find audience here, of all places.

Watched the whole thing yesterday, it IS a good show, but it's a good drama among black characters, who banter and fight among themselves and question their roles and who they want to be in the face of racial incidents. As a comedic satire of race relations, it fails, because very little shows interaction between the races and very little is actually satirical.

Arguably the biggest thing is the opening "Dear Black People" party where a white frat dresses in literal blackface, yet the actual event is quickly forgotten as it makes way to introducing the characters and their reactions to it. Midway into the show, a campus cop literally holds a black student, Reggie, at gunpoint in front of a packed party until he shows his ID. I remember seeing this in Higher Learning two decades ago, and it packed more of a punch. Again, the rest of the show deals with how the core characters react and plan to respond, rather than really delving into race relations itself. It's all very one-sided, and while they probably argue that the incident is meant to be satire, the show plays it off as if these things really DO happen and it's not some exaggeration.

There are two prominent white characters and both are cliches. Gabe, Sam's well meaning vegan-type boyfriend, struggles to stay a part of her world while being overtly concerned with their romance. Then there's Kurt, son of the president and head of the frat, who is a flat out cartoon villain, only showing up to dump on the black people, even holding a counter protest at the show's climax.

Good review, thanks anon

They're all interesting characters, but they do very little in the way of a real racial dialogue and more in the way of "Who am I?" teen drama.

There are only smatterings of racial assumptions being challenged. Sam assumes a black caller defending the cop is white. The foreign student from Kenya is played off for laughs like any other foreign character, but at one point he does say, "All you Americans do is complain. I know so much about what you hate, what is it that you like?" The answer, pancakes for dinner, is another joke.

They constantly talk about waking the campus up, even at on point making an app on who's woke or not, but their efforts are hindered by their personal problems. Sam's protest at the football pep rally, where invariably tons of eyes will see it, fails miserably because she isn't there to coordinate it (instead off dealing with personal drama.) The stereotypical hashtagger even tells them that Saturday is meant to be a day of rest so they can party.

By the climax, nothing's really changed. They try to shoehorn in a plot about the black housing being integrated or white benefactors will pull a drop in the bucket donation, as if black people are seen to self-segregate, and Troy is arrested and nearly held at gunpoint for breaking into the meeting. The point is made and it's clear - that Troy and Reggie are on the same level as both are black - and yet the whole thing feels very anti-climactic.

It ends on a note that suggests that black people don't really know what they want and can be their own worst enemy, but one thing is clear, that they have to stay united against white people. It's a message that is neither new nor delivered in a particularly witty or meaningful manner. And that's why I was ultimately disappointed in the show. As a drama, it's fantastic. As a social commentary, it's flat and unremarkable and somewhat wishy washy. And certainly not the satire that suggests a title like "Dear White People" is meant to stimulate.

Oh and by the way, in episode 5 they randomly introduce an Asian girl at the tailgate party who instantly wants to hang out with them because she hates the tailgaters. She introduces herself as "your catch all Asian friend who you can share your weed with."

They go see a movie, the black characters are complaining about the lack of options, and the Asian girl talks about how she's only had two options since 2000, obviously commenting on the lack of media representation for Asians, even moreso than blacks.

....And then we only see her one more time during a protest meeting, where she gets one line. I think her total screen time across the show totaled maybe five minutes.

Thought that was interesting.

All they're going to see is that big red icon with the percent. I tried proving this point with my gf and anyone else who's ever used RT to gauge if they should see a movie or not.

I saw a different piece of media that gets the same message across in the span of 90 minutes instead of a long drawn out TV show. Oh man, I'll totally miss the white rich kids pretending to be black stereotypes and wear obama masks in the last episode instead of just being the third act in the movie or a that black vid blogger bitch craving for white acceptance through the span of a cour instead of an hour.

The only thing I'll miss is the whole cop hate sensationalism and maybe a few latest trends like BLM. Perhaps an #Oscarssowhite joke.

Stop trying to shill this like it's "Get Out"

This is pretty much what I got from it too. It never committed to racial issues but finished with guns are bad and rich people are bad. The show was clearly made by white people about black people who don't exist dealing with exaggerated situations and one dimensional white people. The only realistic thing about it was nobody goes to class at this college.
