Malick is quite likely the most UNpretentious filmmaker out there, actually. He's honest to a fault, and his cinematic language is as openhearted as it gets. He lays it all out there, open and bare for everyone to see and participate in. But the thing is, he doesn't give you answers. Hell, he doesn't even ask a question. All he wants from you is to look at it, and FEEL. This naturally confuses some, who then mistake this feeling of confusion as the fault of a film that's too difficult to get, pretentious. But the only thing at fault is their closed heart, which can't just look at the wonders of the world and life itself, and let himself feel.

I can understand if people don't like that kind of film because they want more plot or any other valid reason for dislike. It's not for everyone. But don't go using a vapid criticism that does not even apply. Pretentious is one of the most misused words people use when they really mean 'I was bored'.
