New episode tonight, no threads.
What'd you think, lads?
Me, well I thought that was a goddamn load of filler to advance the plot in the last five minutes what could have been done in the first five!
>I can help!
Season 1 still the best.

/tv/ is a west coast board

Not exactly subtle, this episode. Still, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

This is why /tv/ has become so pleb. Idiots who need to be bombarded with new info from different directions instead of focusing on one story like an adult. It was a nice change of pace and these people act like they were robbed or something.

Loved the episode. I just hope they don't start pushing ufo and aliens down our throats too much. It might start feel like pandering soon. People loved it in S2, but there's no need to bring it up over and over again. Otherwise, another excellent season.

It was a lot different than I though it would be. Was expecting the whole episode to be about what happen in its last 5 minutes.

Still, I enjoyed it for what it was, and this singular story was a nice break between all these other storylines. It's themes were a bit on the nose but still interesting. Nice to Mac as well.

I'm hoping the next episode focuses on the brothers mostly.

>She's symbolising the disconnect between small town values and the big city, right?
The biggest recurring theme in Fargo is the idea that the times are changing, and how people react to this. Season 2 especially pushed this. You either adapt, or are crushed by the oncoming tide. The past can no more become the future than the future can become the past. It seems that she's going to be very much that character, someone 'stuck' in more traditional values, struggling to adapt to a changing world.

It should be noted that the show doesn't really seem to support that things actually change, or get worse at any rate. In Season 1 they talk about how simpler things were when they were kids, but then in Season 2 we see when they were kids, and shit was even worse. The dichotomy here is a very important part of the show. Mike Milligan talked about it with his revolution speech.

Just finished rewatching all of Season 2. A lot of moments that didn't effect me before got to me more than I expected. Peggy's breakdown after Ed dies, when she's completely incoherent and on the verge of sobbing, when Lou's holding her back. Or when Simone's begging for her life in front of Dodd. It felt a lot more brutal this time around, their desperation got to me.

What actually really impresses me is how much the fake out with Betsy dying in episode 9 still gets to me, even though I know she's still alive. It got me good on my first watch through, but even rewatching it, I still get emotional.
>>
>>82374955
For me the part that got to me is where Lou talks about the pilot in Vietnam, and how a man has a duty to his family.

I think that's one of the things that S2 did best. The different families, and what it takes for a family to work. Lou and Betsy are doing a great job, but have the cancer eating away at it. Peggy and Ed are just incompatible but both trying to do things the best way they know how. Floyd is trying to hold everything together knowing that it's rotten to the core.

It's such a good series.
>>
Reminder that they will never top Season 1, no matter how hard they try.

All we'll get will be kino-replicas

That was a cute episode, very Barton Fink-like (obviously).

It's telling how much better the show gets once Ewan McTerribleAtAccents is out, even though I like everyone else in that story. Carrie Coon is cute as fuck.
>>
Why are people going "we already knew that"?
>>
It was quite weird really, because although it was a neat little side story, it means that all the speculation goes away about the guy's death.
>>
>>82375180
>>82375189
This. Fargo is really at its strongest when it's bizarre but very humanistic. This episode was that. You can't just be ridiculous, it doesn't create pathos.
>>
I think the point was for Carrie Coon to learn that her current approach to police work (and with the Facebook talk, maybe her aversion to technology) is not going to help her get anywhere. Her head is stuck in the 70's, and so the only answers she finds are stuck in that time as well. She returns home to find the town doofus has cracked the case while she was off chasing leads from the 70's.

I think she's going to have some new insight to the case after having the revelation tonight that her current approach gets her nowhere, and maybe the "new chief" was a bit right about her after all, even if he was an insufferable prick about it.

It stands to reason that in the next week or two she'll pull the thread on the AC unit guy until it leads to Ray, and she's not a dummy so the Stussy connection is gonna get made real quick, probably causing things to escalate much further than they have up to now.

Also, Gloria's shirts are great.

I think this episode might have been a riff on that part of 'Fargo' movie where Marge Gunderson meets that old school friend of hers and then later learns he lied about almost everything. It feels unconnected in the movie, but actually implants the idea in her head that Lundegaad lied to her.

Similarly this little misadventure might lead her to thinking that her father-in-law was killed simply for having the wrong name.
>>
>>82373839
Officer Hunt was a bit of a caricature, but I guess that was the point of his existence.
I wonder where they'll take Gloria and her aversion to modern technology.
>>

Yeah, this is exactly what it is, and also has her realize technology is pretty good for at least some things.

I don't know if there's an actual supernatural element coming here, but I think all the quantum Schrodinger shit this episode all relates to her. She's both there and not.

She's divorced and not divorced, she's chief but she's not, and when she's asked if Ennis was her father she answers "Step father, sort of", electronics don't know whether she's there or not.

This is a good concise take.

People complaining about the pointlessness of this episode, which is literally addressed by the main character in the story, are willfully missing the forest for the trees.
>>
>>82377556
The autistic? Yes it is.
>>
The way I see this episode is that the robot through out his whole journey despite always saying he could help, was never able to help anyone or anything, i.e. useless. But in the end, he had helped, simply by being an observer to all history. He might had been a useless box, but he was indeed useful in the end.
As for Gloria's trip to LA, she got to meet all these people and heard all this story but still got no closer to solving the mystery of her stepdad's death. It may all seems useless now, but it will be useful later, as was hinted by the fact that she brought the 'useless' box back with her, i.e. she didn't come back empty-handed, she now has something that will be useful later on.
I think this episode will function similar to how Mike Yanagita's story did in the movie, as things not related to the plot, but influence the character's thinking.
>>
>>82379553
that's not really a bad santa reference though...
>>
>>82375771
well .. she didn't really started any investigation at home, so if that was the point, changing her investigation methods and aversion to technology is too soon, she didn't get stucked with that case.
>>
>>82379688
it's as much of a reference as pretty much anything else the show has done. call it a "nod" if it makes you more comfortable but don't tell me it wasn't deliberate.

Bad Santa isn't even a coen brothers movie. Just because a show or movie has something, it doesn't mean it's an homage or nod or whatever to everything or anything that used it before it. If the santa that stole it jumped into a car with a black midget dressed as an elf, you might have a reference.

They were also executive producers on the movie and essentially it wouldn't exist without them.

It matters how tv shows are made because productions don't plan to inject a bunch of literal "bad santas" into a shoot unless it's been thought out by a large number of people, and for some purpose. If you are trying to tell me it's just a coincidence I will reiterate that you are a fucking rube.
>>
>>82380244
It being deliberate doesn't make it any less cutesy distracting bullshit masking a vapid meaningless story.
>>
>>82380244
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/12/residents-try-to-derail-annual-meeting-of-drunk-santas.html

they're an actual thing. Writers take shit they think is funny or interesting and inject it into their shows. It's not necessarily a reference or a nod to some movie. So no, I don't think it's a nod to bad santa, nor a reference to it. They literally plucked something out of headlines and used it to add character.

I mean, with Hawley fucked up writing it's possible. But that would be entirely wrong character wise. Charlie was a good hearted guy who couldn't even kill the guy he believed was his uncle's murderer. Varga on the other hand, is a cold blooded calculating sociopath. Do the math.

ever since i heard hawley say season 3 would "tackle the smartphone era" i was worried theyd be too upfront about it and try to write the story around that theme instead of weaving it in here and there. this episode had two obvious shots of people on their smartphones which was the equivalent of "LOOK HERE, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY ABSORBED INTO THEIR SMARTPHONES!"

I think the idea is to set up that trope of TECHNOLOGY SUCKS LOOK AT THESE LOSERS including the antagonistic new chief, only to pull the rug from underneath it.

We already got that partially in this episode, where Gloria spends all episode uncovering a lot but not accomplishing much, and the idiot fat cop just running a fingerprint scan and finding the perpetrator.

Also, Gloria just doesn't seem in tune with technology at all, like the doors not reacting to her and her cell phone not getting her speech.
