Why can't the west make complex antagonists like Griffith?

The west politicizes art too much. These days pretty much any antagonist is going to (rightfully sometimes but mostly wrongfully) be compared to a Nazi or Rapist so its a death sentence for a film to try to make you sympathize with them or at least understand their motivation.
In the east they are a little bit more free in that sense.
