Hey Anon, I've got some advice for you
>*lights cuban cigar*
You need to get off your butt and work as a welder
>*hops in Mercedes*
Work hard. Take a job. Take any job, and give it your all. Don't complain
>*receives check for $8 million for a commercial narration*
Take the S.W.E.A.T. pledge today, and promise me you'll work 60-hour weeks
>*eats lobster dinner*
You need to be more grateful. You need to get your hands dirty
>*wipes mouth with fine cloth made of Egyptian silk*
still need help? Just watch my show, Anon. Hard work is actually really fun and stress-free.

Yeah. On the TV show. He hasn't had a job outside the entertainment industry since he was 22. He has a degree in communications and was an opera singer at one point.

Nobody's life gets improved if the factory closes or the high level of unionization stops companies from moving in.

And the only rational response to this point is, "Well EVERYBODY should be unionized!" which just makes it an even bigger racket.

No, retard. Cheaper prices in exchange for causing part of your consumer population to enter unemployment is NOT "good for the economy", because one way or another, those unemployed workers are getting paid (government benefits or if you cancel those, crime), so now the economy is paying the old workers AND your new "cheap" workers who have even lower productivity than the "low skill" natives due to language barriers and such.

The reason you people are cancer is because you think you understand economics when you've really just been fed a bunch of PC bullshit.
>>
>>82329266
Yes, it actually is, and those impersonal forces are globalization and improving technology.

>>
>>82329288
What support do you have for that? I mean, obviously at the limits you'd be right, but there's universal agreement among economists that trade agreements like NAFTA (that cause unemployment and decrease prices) are good for the economy.

The only cancer here is you because you've managed to convince yourself you know the truth and that everybody else is an idiot, when, in fact, you're the idiot.
>>
>>82329271

And protip: anti-retaliation laws don't mean shit. There are people who fight their boss, and there are people who advance in their jobs.
>>
>>82329322
Is everything you don't agree with now "PC"? Globalization isn't low-wage workers coming into the country. It's the emergence of ever more efficient multinational corporations, a process that's been sped up by technological change.

But they almost never are. I can't think of one. You have to be in the union if you want this job. You have to pay dues. You have to let someone else bargain for you.

Protip: when you're talking about a large economy, which has complexity enough to rival the human brain, a human brain is not going to be able to grasp the whole thing anyway. Its beyond the cognitive limit.

This is why "experts" in some fields are so unreliable compared to other sciences (see also: sociology and psychology).
>>
>>82330131
Obama deported record numbers of illegals and illegal immigration leveled off. I suppose he started DREAM and DACA, but you'll note Trump isn't getting rid of those.
>>

Yes, and it is still better than the other alternative at the time (Hillary and the Democratic party) who were literally almost out-right stating they will legalize them if elected.

>You can't seriously not see the importance of universities.
Colleges are important and there are plenty of fields that require college degrees. However, in the 90s it became expected that people should "go to college."

There are dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of jobs that shouldn't require a degree. There are degrees that exist that shouldn't.

People think they have to go to college now to get a "good job" and it's not true.

Employers who are looking for office workers, like typists and secretaries, etc, should not require degrees. Accounting firms should only require 2 year associate's degrees.

Gender studies, and the things like it, are useless except in academia. There is not a future in it except for a very small minority of people who are brilliant. A philosophy degree will get like 1% of people employed as authors and will get the other 99% a shit ton of debt.

This is coming from someone who get a fucking expensive degree in communications and now makes $80k a year not using the degree.
>>
>>82330239

>>
>>82330232
Its not a matter of not studying, but right now, there's a massive "I fucking love science!" portion of the population which has become obsessed with treating soft sciences as hard science, when there needs to be a grain of salt taken.

See: any time someone has argued a feminist or social justice position as being "proven by science".

In this conversation, the relevant point is trying to shut down arguments about short-term harm of free trade based on "assurances" that it will have long-term benefits.
Fuck the assurances of soft scientists. Their word is not worth enough to cause concrete harm over.
>>

>>82330258
I take your point that Clinton was for citizenship. But I don't think deporting 15M is feasible politically or otherwise, and I don't think that Trump will do it. Trump will just have a highly public crackdown like he's having now that won't actually have any significant impact on the total number.

I don't know enough to say whether legalizing illegals is a good idea or not, but the choice is probably between 15M illegals working in the shadow economy or 15M citizens.
>>
>>82330330
So, you don't have an alternative.

There aren't just assurances. Free trade has had measurable short-term benefits.
>>
>>82330261

>>

I'm not saying we should surrender decisionmaking to experts, but we should certainly take them into account.

I think your alternative (at least in terms of tariffs and protectionism) will harm the USA in the short and long run. You might save some jobs in the short term, but they'll be gone eventually, meanwhile cost of goods will keep going up for everyone else. I suppose I could see how that's a tradeoff someone would accept, but I don't care for it.

Ex-Boiler maker here.

The idea you can "Work hard and get rich" is pretty much a myth. Making a big break basically requires Nepotism or Luck.

The vast majority of Blue Collar workers do extremely hard, back breaking labour, for long hours, and earn maybe around the same amount as a low level office worker.

I remember looking over the fence during work and watching like office workers go get a coffee and shit and be able to sit in air conditioned/heated offices while I'm stuck surrounded by fucking meathead assholes doing 12-14 hours a day completely open to the elements and those office workers, likely, were earning more than me.

Oh also try take a 5 minute break? Sit down after carrying a 100kg load up several flights of stairs in 40C temprature and the foreman sees you? Say hello to a written warning.

Blue Collar work fucking sucks dick, most people in the trades are fucking high school drop out machismo idiots who only care about sport and the pay sucks.
Oh and it's incredibly dangerous and you're basically guaranteed to have severe health problems by 40.

The only thing Trades does have over office work is the work itself is more interesting in the trades, it can actually be fun at times, where office work is literal tedium.
>>
>>82331396
>We have nothing to lose, they everything to gain

So what are you suggesting?
>>
>>82331511
I think it really depend on the location.

Over here, (not US), skilled labor is in demand. one month on a construction you will make twice or three time more than the average office worker which is around 1000 USD.

If anything, it is the low to mid level office workers are getting squeezed these day for not seeing any raises in salary.
>>
>>82330604
4chan is filled with young people who haven't really experienced what the real world is like and thus they build their entire political views on "triggering liberals/the left" even if that means fostering a shitty fucking culture that will fuck them in the ass when they properly enter the workforce.

Though, /pol/'s brainwashing is probably so intense that these idiots would defend their own bosses engaging in wage theft against them (which pretty much does happen in most low level jobs)
>>
>>82329940

You can make a lot of money in the trades, but what people don't see is the hours.

Most tradies will start work about 5-6am and will work to often 5-6pm, hell often I would leave work at 7pm.

You get half an hour break.

You also will generally work a "half day" on Saturday, so you work from 5-to usually 1 or 2.

So yeah, you're going to be pulling money, but most of that money comes from long hours/overtime. The average payrate for the trades is only $40,000 even in the US though this may not take into account overtime which is where money is actually made.
>>

I actually like the work less, office work is literally sleep inducing and I find myself struggling to stay awake most days, but the atmosphere and people you work with and flexibility make up for it 100 fold. We also get a 15 minute break every hour for get this, occupational health and safety reasons, so we don't get back and hand cramps from sitting on our asses on a computer.

Oh also Flex time, flex time is the greatest shit ever.

Even if I didn't have this injury I would never go back to the trades. The work environment in the trades is toxic as fuck.

That's the caveat about trades, you gotta be willing to work hard and you have to actually be good at what you do. If you are mediocre, you're not going to do well in the trades, but if you are truly good at what you do, the trades can open a lot of opportunities for you.

I had a professor who started his career (note that he graduated high school with a 1.7 GPA) as an aircraft mechanic working for a logging company. He had to live in a large tent on site in the mountains, working on the heavy lift helicopters that hauled lumber away from the site. It was hard work, bad living conditions, and he was away from home for weeks at a time.

He also made about $3500 a week after taxes. He was living in the mountains and the company fed him, so he had practically no living expenses. Officially, he was on duty for 120 hour shifts (his whole workweek was one shift because during his shift he was on call at all times, even though he only typically devoted 6 hours a day to actually working unless something really fucked up) so he made INSANE amounts of overtime bonuses because he was working literally days overtime. By the time he left that company to settle down with his wife, he already owned a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home in the countryside. After another decade of working in town, he had enough experience to apply as a college professor. He never got a college degree.

It's not that you actually learn anything in college; it's that the supply of college educated people is so high, you need a degree simply to have a chance of getting work in most fields. Unlees higher education is made much more difficult to access, this will just keep spiralling in a vicious circle as automation creeps in and wipes out 75% of the job market.

This is straight up bourgeoisie brainwashing. If you want to move up in the world and make it to the middle and upper classes you are going to need to incur some debt at some point in your life. Every millionaire has debt. Every businessman takes out loans.
>>

To add to this

>low-level lumber company mechanics
Because first off, working on helicopters is much more involved than fixed wing aircraft. Although they all use the same certification, mechanics who are used to working on helicopters are generally considered more skilled and valuable than those who usually work on fixed wing aircraft. So right out the gate he is considered a cut above the typical A&P mechanic.

Second, remember how I mentioned it is easier to advance in trades without the need for education? Well going from logging helicopters he went to a luxery helicopter mechanic, then a luxery helicopter mechanic foreman. He didn't advance in his career because of education, it was purely because of experience and the fact that he is very, very good at what he does. So the school didn't just hire some sloppy mechanic, by the time he applied for the job he was a fairly well known name in the local aeronautics industry.

It doesn't really work like that. I'm not in the tax group, and it's too late for me to switch unless I found another job and made a massive effort. I do transactional work, which I think is enough of a pain and involves enough client interaction that it'll be among the last on the chopping block.

>some people
Most people. It takes above average intelligence to create addee value without direct supervision, and even then investment always comes with risk.

Your average factory worker simply is not capable of starting and running an enterprise. Once monkey jobs run out, most people are left high and dry. Funnily enough, the smug urbanite shitting on these people is on average no more capable of adapting than they are. Automation will eventually hit, but there is no point accelerating this process by offshoring and fucking yourself over in the mean time, while giving the pajeets a chance to gradually transition.

Oh, and one last point is that the school already had two professors, each with at least three decades of experience and each with a masters in mechanical engineering, but neither of them where helicopter specialists.

My point is that if you are willing to work hard and you are actually good at what you do, trades can offer a broad path to success without you ever stepping foot in a college. Blue collar work is much more meritocratic than white collar work, where mediocrity is acceptable so long as you meet your expectations. Blue collar work has a much greater potential to reward exceptional skill or long experience.

I went to high school, university, and law school over here. Your best bet would be to work for a few years in Bosnia (preferably in corporate law) and get an LLM from a top program here in the states, which takes a year. Then you'll have to find a corporate law firm (almost certainly in NYC) to sponsor you, and you'll take the NY bar and all that.

You might as well shoot an application here every year too: https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/.

That's how I got in.
>>
>>82332907
nah, if you have experience which you seem to, you are unlikely to be out of job. But law as a profession has already started to shrink. Plus the massive expansion of the pool of people with legal training and education.

at least in ausfag land, maybe you'd be surprised at how much mundane law stuff isn't done by lawyers anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if white collars professions get hit harder in some ways, easier to make a computer program do shit than it is to automate a robot to be a plumber.

Shlomo here is right. Debt serves a purpose - it is a way for potential value creators to access starting capital. While banking can and does get horrribly abused, there is nothing wrong with the idea of debt in principle. That'll be changing soon enough.

The office workers basically just sort through information and shit out appropriate responses to that information. Their work doesn't even need a robot to replace, just appropriately applied computing power.

Marketing, sales, and shit like that will still be humans but kiss goodbye to most
>accounting departments
>records departments

Customer service is also about to feel automation in their lazy asses. They won't be eliminated but technology's improving to squeeze maximum efficiency out of them, pit them against one another, and make performance very measurable- making them accountable for their performance.

Managers are about to be hit hardest. The decision-making isn't what eats up managerial time, it's data analysis. Soon, managers of offices and even hospitals and medical settings are going to have VERY powerful tools to gauge performance and inform their decision making. They won't have to pour over records or do performance reviews or audit anyone's work- software will kick out clean, accurate data to inform those decisions. Know what that means? Fewer managers!

Skilled labor that can't be easily replaced with a machine will be very happy campers.
Competent managers who can work with improved software will thrive.
Lazy shits and redundant departments will suffer.

No sane employer LIKES keeping around a small army of paper pushers and phone monkeys. It'll end soon enough.

I finally saved up 21k and taking that money and just leaving. Traveling around the world with just a backpack and seeing how long it will last. Not even 100 years ago it was impossible for people to see and visit countries like Japan and Russia and we all waste are lives never experiencing this world or traveling. Sure people do meaningless stupid vacation like Hawaii or Italy, but they never actually go and truly have a travel adventure. Well I am.

It's insane, I mean i finished my associates in comp sci, but immediately started my own consulting firm with a friend afterwards, but i'd say about 20% of the people I know who finished school within a specific major are actually doing work in that field. and that goes for about 3 graduating classes before and after myself, as I had friends across that spectrum. I know that's all anecdotal and national averages are probably more consistant, but all I ever see is grads whining about how the markets are too saturated and their degree doesn't really help. Also paid or even unpaid internships are on the decline in general, leaving no practice to the book learning when they finish.
