I think when it comes to television adaptations of things like this you can't expect a faithful adaptation. Because it simply won't sell. And it has to fucking sell.

Look at Stardust, it had to sell so it had to be dashing. Now, I thought Stardust (comic) was trash and the movie did everything much better.

We can only hope that the series is just good from an objective perspective. Like Consatntine (movie) - fucking loses all the nuance of Hellblazer but it was still a good movie.

I expect American Gods (show) to be good; it certainly won't be as good as the book, but it will be the best show it could possibly be (I hope). It's going to fuck up a lot and probably have way more focus on the sex and violence than the whole "road trip" aspect of it, but you're just going to have to write that off as needing to appeal to shitters.

In the book, there's an epilogue where Shadow goes to Scandinavia and meets their Odin, who's a separate person from the American one, although it seems like he knows who Shadow is. This is my all time favorite book, but yeah all in all this is a story about stories and not much more. You're not going to get spoiled by knowing a plot point or two.

On top of that, Gaiman has said a bunch of times that the show is going to follow the book for a while but also do a lot of new things on its own, so it'll be fresh for both newcomers and people who have read the book.

With my initial post, I meant it more in the sense that Starz sees that this particular scene got a large response (as will the gay cabbie scene I presume) so they tell Fuller & Gaiman and whoever else to write another scene to add to the show with these characters, even though they only show up for like a side chapter + one or two other scenes
Another reason being most of these kind of shows try to build an ensemble cast. I can already hear tumblr shits latching on to an american gods "fandom" and saying they want to see more of X and whoever the fuck else.
