Can a Stupid Character still be engaging? Ryan Gosling in pic related is an absolute moron but is arguably the most valuable character. Are there other examples of idiots who are still good characters?

I'd say you're a pretty good character OP.
This movie was really enjoyable seen it 3 times now on hbo definitely a niche film not for everyone
Basically every Coen Bros protag
Appear weak when you are strong and strong when you are weak
Well gee bill I don't know, like every Mr.Bean movie ever, most of the chinese Jackie Chan movies (even some of the american ones). Simon Pegg and his fat male wife in Shawn of the dead ( that end of the world movie too, forgot the name). Naked Gun movies, Charlie sheen movies, American Pie movies etc... You get the picture.
Just watched this movie the other night. I thought it was really funny (I laughed especially hard at the rim job part) but was I the only one that thought it was really bizarre? Like it was mostly a comedy but with random serious parts? Good movie, but strange as fuck.

this is pretty damn accurate
brad pitt and frances mcdormand (the woman) in burn after reading both steal the show while being some of the absolute largest idiots

I think it mainly worked, the "serious" scenes never really struck me as anything more than miniature palette cleansers where they take a moment to move the plot forward before going into a shootout or comedy scene
There are a few spots where they speak a bit to the overall themes, like at the end where Ryan Gosling says that maybe the birds really are dying, but to me those scenes helped ground the characters a bit more by letting you know that their worldview is being altered by the scale of the events happening around them

>Can a Stupid Character still be engaging?
Almost all comedy relies on that.
