As someone who's never read the book and doesn't know what this story is actually about I thought the first episode was enjoyable.

Will watch.
That black chick with the unbirth scene was annoying though, they should have had at least picked a good looking one.

It's guaranteed to be shit after a season or two.

> The two are in a graveyard mourning their respective spouses, who died in a car crash while engaging in oral sex. Audrey, who has had time to mull the affair, is bitter and wants revenge. She argues that the act will provide closure. Meanwhile, Shadow is in something closer to a state of shock. According to Gaiman, Fuller and Green initially proposed that the fellatio take place, but Gaiman said he threatened to take extreme measures if that happened.
>“I’m like, ‘Okay, guys, if you do that, I will go and step in front of a bus, and I will leave a suicide note explaining exactly why this is your fault,’” Gaiman said. “They were like, ‘You really feel that strongly?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I really do. He would not do that, and it’s wrong, and it throws everything out of kilter.’ And they are like, ‘Yeah, but he’s just out of prison. Wouldn’t he want a blowjob?’

Anansi Boys is easily enough for another season and it was actually better than American Gods imo.

i got a feeling they are going to drag out Shadow's time in that midwest town for a couple episodes at least.

You realise that Gaiman regularly fucks his fans and has cosplay threesomes with his wife and Stoya.

I liked it, good casting overall (although I'm always a bit annoyed when American productions won't just cast Middle Eastern actors for Egyptians). Something felt weird about the sound mixing though, sometimes the dialogue was hella low.

>CGI is really fucking expensive
it really isn't if you're not in a rush. most of this stuff could be done by a single guy on a computer in india or korea but it'd take many months. studios are in a hurry and compete for very limited slots with a couple big effects companies, which drives the prices up and leads directly to those inflated capeshit budgets that'll destroy hollywood.

>>

>CGI is really fucking expensive
Not really. The prices are artificially inflated so the CGI-companies can make more money. Once the Chinese and Indians get enough processing power, decent CGI will be as cheap as dirt in the Ukraine.

I enjoyed the book, and I approve of the first episode, with the sole exception of the "Coming to America"-part, which I am certain would have been better if they'd stuck to the book. Of course, I understand the change, as most viewers wouldn't understand the method of sacrifice and the "eight-legged horse"-reference. Still, it could've been done a bit more tasteful IMO.

There's one thing I don't get about the new gods is that the idea is that their power comes from people worshiping them, but people don't literally worship gods of TV and the internet. I mean sure TV and the internet are common in everyday life, but no one actually believes there are patron gods for them, like no one prays to the god of the internet to fix their router.

CGI requires artistry and talent. The reason that CGI is so expensive is because it requires a lot of talent and involved work. Not because they require a lot of processing power.

Not convinced. Not digging the casting (but then that was to be expected, so willing to give it a pass) not really liking the tone shifts from the book (just look at the Odin summoning tale).

The 3rd and 4th aren't that far off either.

I'm kinda afraid they're going to turn it into a minorities vs the man thing when the book was smart enough to make it about everyone with and against everyone else.

Making the Odin sacrifice an act self-mutilation instead of the killing of an innocent local really changes the tone, and the framing of things to come.
>>
>>82264695

I think a lot of people missed that Shadow was ambiguously brown in the book. I think Gaiman actually changed it to make his character description more explicit in the extended version of the book. Otherwise, we only have that Shadow's mom died from complications of sickle-cell disorder (so she was probably black).
Spoiler part for the book:

Is his dad "actually" a Norse god?
I might have misunderstood some of the book,
but I thought that the native american guy who the vikings hung in the flashback was actually Mr. Wednesday, since part of the story involved people literally making new gods. Plus, Mr.
Wednesday was described as having a very "leather" complexion

Yes and no, they created a new aspect of Odin when they did that, one which lived in and adapted to american culture. That's the way I interpreted it anyway with all the references to Odin hanging himself as a sacrafice of himself to himself, and the Odin Shadow ran into in Iceland proves that they can have other aspects as well.
>>
>>82271653
He's an aspect of Odin adapted to the North American continent. Basically via faith the vikings "cloned" Odin, but because it was a different land he took on physical characteristics appropriate to the land. In a fuzzy way, it's like quantum entanglement because they're both Odin and yet the same Odin, just with different fashion sense, presumably with complete knowledge of each other yet indivisible, capable of existing in two places at the same time, doing two different things, and being aware of what both parts are doing and where both parts are simultaneously.

I always loved Kirby's take on this in the New Gods:

>And the New Gods? We're as old as time, constantly remade. Constantly reborn with each turning of the wheel.
>No WORSHIPPERS? FOOL!!! LOOK ABOUT YOU! Each time a mortal turns on a computer, puts a piece of bread in the toaster, opens a door, strikes a match, or wonders at the stars...he WORSHIPS at the altar of the New Gods.
>>

>>82273244
>>82271653
Has Gaiman ever actually discussed or clarified this in more detail?
>>
>>82271653

That's why I don't really like the casting choice. Not nearly ambiguous enough (and then look at poor Ibis). I mean, I can leave with it, the complete lack of finesse, the transition from what was a fairly grounded magic realism rendition to this image over substance adaptation is much worse than some minor casting quibble.

They're folding all of the post-American Gods material (Black Dog, Anansi Boys and the Monarch of the Glenn, as well as the forthcoming sequel) into the show's upcoming seasons. Gaiman has also said that he'll begin work in earnest on the sequel after he finishes the kid's book he's working on.

It's packaged a bit differently compared to the book. I wasn't all that invested in the book from what I can remember (been about 5 years). But the first ep really had an unusual atmosphere that managed to feel enticing and refreshing compared to most other shows.
Now it depends how they'll continue to structure the story and what kind of liberties they'll take.

I don't like the lead actor's performance as Shadow. He emotes too much, should be more taciturn. I have a hard time believing he grew up a quite bookworm. And I doubt anyone would suspect THAT guy of having Native American blood.

The guy playing him looks like a full on arab and acts like a prison thug that is constantly trying to suppress a nigga moment and wanted kudos from his dead wife for learning math in prison. seriously weird portrayal.
>>
>>82280477

The fact he's also been called Indian and black in this thread kinda proves they did good casting. The only similar ethnicity no one in this thread has compared him to is native American which is talked about in the book
