I am from the UK, we produce a fair load of crap but we also produce some comfy dramas to watch and I was expecting to find some comfy modern dramas or something from China.

I actually came up with an idea for a K-drama black comedy ages ago.

Fat autist kid in high school, everyone bullies him calling him a weirdo and a freak and after one super harsh bullying incident, he runs home crying.
At home, he's like "Why do people call me a weirdo, a freak? why am I always picked on", at the same time, the News is showing Kim Jong Un and and the world reacting to another nuclear test and the kids like "look at him, he's a real weirdo and freak, but all the world powers are afraid of him and he gets his own country where people worship him, why can't I have that!?" then, lightbulb goes off.

He then models himself on Kim Jong Un, Juche ideals and plans to take over his entire school, then city.

Basically the entire show becomes about this kid becoming a psychopath Machiavellian gangster, modelling himself on dear leader, and episodes basically play out in a similar way to Scott Tenorman Must Die from South Park, he legit just fucking gets people murdered and shit, working his way up to the top of the school, while building a harem and basically his own juche cult.

But in general, Korean audiences kind of want something different that's also very similar. So they wind up making the same show over and over and over again, but there's something very superficial that's "different" about them. Like, oh, this show is about vampires, but then not really, it's just the same K-drama you've seen a billion times.

K-dramas are unironically my guilty pleasure but it's just a fact that majority of them are garbage.

Garbage that I enjoy for some reason, but still garbage. Maybe 5% is good, and even with the few good dramas, often the story goes to shit in the last few episodes. They almost always revolve too much around lovelines and romance. Which makes sense, because the core audience in Korea and foreign countries is almost exclusively female.

I think the only strength they have is that many dramas, even happy ones have downer endings. This is obviously something that isn't new to american TV either, but most American mainstream shows do have usually happy endings. That isn't always the case with Korean dramas. But sometimes it leads to weird endings, you can have a mindless, quirky, dumb sentimental drama and then suddenly the last 2 episodes go full grimdark and it ends with every character being miserable and unhappy as fuck.

The problem with Kdramas and Jdramas, is like 90% of the time, they are based on a Webcomic or Shojou manga, but then, like remove anything good about that Shojou manga or Webcomic to make it fit the mold of a TV drama.

Shojou manga, typically written by women, generally have pretty headstrong, balanced female characters, yet every single drama show, will change that character, into a super submissive, lovesick girl, for example.

Hell, maybe they will make a K-drama of Sweet Guy and not fuck it up.

Can't speak on kdramas but to avoid alot of the schlock that you can get with Jdramas I just watch the ones that contain my favourite actor or actress or I pick by studio.
ie. wowow dramas have higher production values and are usually pretty serious whereas tbs dramas are usually episodic and drive home that kitschy ganbatte we're all in this together after school special shit from the 90's.
