Why did they only ever do the saucer seperation twice, and both in the first season

Did they just forget?

Wouldnt it be useful to have two ships when facing one opponent?
>>
probably because it was more expensive to film than they suspected, and because it made the ship look kinda goofy

the enterprise D always had really nice lines and it didnt make sense to break them up for a gimmick

in universe? riker once said he liked having the extra power from the saucers impulse engines. also the saucer was pretty vulnerable without warp drive or photon torpedoes so it didn't make sense to do things like leave it on the fed side of the neutral zone either.

you do know how much paperwork and departmental meetings that would require right?

The saucer separation was supposed to be a common thing in the show, but when they actually went to do it they underestimated how difficult it would be to pull off, because the Enterprise model was extremely heavy.

So yeah, they did it for the pilot, but they didn't want to continually re-use the footage from the pilot, so they just dropped the concept.

Here's a cool video talking about how the effects were done in TNG

Haven't owned a TV in a long time, does Trek still air on television? I used to watch TNG and DS9 on SpikeTV, TOS on TVLand, and ENT came on at like 2am on, I think, WB. I never saw Voyager on television, that was only after i discovered torrents.

SyFy still airs TNG and TOS

Thanks for the video. I love watching those video effects reels. Really makes me wish I was born 20 years earlier so I could be part of the industry.

Ok wow they used it 6 times then

and once in a movie that doesnt count

Yeah that excuses it

Did they ever give an in-universe reason as to why Troi didn't have to wear a uniform? Why didn't Gene want the character in uniform?

Excuses what? OP's questions were

>Why did they only ever do the saucer seperation twice, and both in the first season
False premise, as demonstrated

>Did they just forget?
Clearly not, because saucer separation is a thing that reappears throughout the show. If that constitutes "forgetting", then the writers also "forgot" that Worf had a son, and that Picard had an artificial heart, and that Mars exists.

>Wouldnt it be useful to have two ships when facing one opponent?
Yes, it would - and this is precisely why it was used in The Best of Both Worlds.

Trek Ship design is retarded but we forgive it because it isn't hard sci fi, but it's about as hard as you can get on TV.

Of course a gimmick won't feature much in a show that is mostly about working a solution out, rather than how the nonsense machines work.

>Did they ever give an in-universe reason as to why Troi didn't have to wear a uniform?

Picard let her dress casually so that patients might feel more comfortable around her. She wore a uniform at first, but the TNG mini was abandoned even faster than the rest of the first season uniforms, and it wasn't until Season 6 they got her back into uniform. See Chain of Command.

>>82196191

Ultimately, there just wasn't justification to use it often. It was something that had been a concept since the earliest planning days of TOS, but once they finally did it, there wasn't much use for it. On top of that, it was expensive and didn't look very good.

>Wouldnt it be useful to have two ships when facing one opponent

I would rather have one big ship than two small ones. The antimatter reactor is in the engineering section, so the saucer section is really weak.
>>

Evasive maneuvers.

So what the fuck was Guinan doing on the Enterprise serving drinks

Her race was wiped out by the Borg and she has powers to rival a Q but just fucks around in a bar serving Troi fudge sundays and telling Geordi he is an autist who can never get laid, instead of being productive?
>>
>>82206035
She's a magical negro, it's her life's ambition use her powers and give advice to help white people
>>
>>82206035
>>82206415
What are their powers exactly? I know they live very long and are good listeners but she couldn't read minds.

I loved Whoopi but she honestly created a lot of plot holes too. Like no mentioning she met Data back on earth in the 19th century...

Yes, he was there when Scotty watched Kirk die, not be confused with Scotty being rescued from the Dyson sphere thinking Kirk was captaining the Enterprise to do so.

>>
>>82207093
Her powers weren't equal to a Q, or even close. She was just some wise old person for Picard to talk to, with undescribed mysterious awareness of things.
>>
>>82207481
lol fuck I actually like Relics but you are right that is a major plot hole.

Generations was so terrible how could they fuck that up so bad. First Contact is the only TNG movie worth a damn.
>>
>>82207560
Q shit himself when he came face to face with her, they both instinctively raised their guard to each other.

The intention that she at least posed a threat to him is clear as day.

In addition to costing more than they expected it also slowed the scripts down. You can't really do battle scenes when you have to stop and separate the ship in half every damn time. Same reason the TOS writers invented the teleporter instead of using shuttles to leave the ship.

Jesus Christ, those questions were easy as fuck! I didn't even watch most of Voyager and I still knew all that shit. The Neelix question practically had the answer as part of the question and they still had no clue!
>>
>>82196191
It's sort of a stupid concept when you think about it. "Let's turn half the ship into a slow-moving escape pod while halving the combat ability of the other half."

>>82206035
I don't think it was ever established she had excessive magical powers or whatnot. If anything I'd imagine she's one of those rare races Q just can't seem to affect in any way and that scares the fuck out of him.

>>82206035
Maybe she's waiting for better days. Living on the Enterprise, she can both evade Q and other enemies (at least in theory), and also get to go places, where she might find other surviving elaurians.

And as for her powers, she/they can somehow sense different realities and possibilities, something which scared the Q, and that's why their homeworld was destroyed.

Well, that's my headcanon anyway.

It was because she was so much older than the Enterprise crew. She had heard of him before.
>>
>>82198305

They also attempted to use it in Brothers when data locked them out of the bridge to try and force the ship to drop out of warp, but haxxor data was too smart for them.
>>
>>82206035

Her only power was stabbing Q in the hand with a fork.
>>
>>82207761
Q is afraid of other Qs.

Guinan knows other Qs.
