You can't Blame Ridley Scott. Of course he wanted to do his own thing and explore the Engineers history. But you must remember, movies are made by a studio's approval. Gone are the days when a director can do pretty much whatever he wants. You have to make concessions. You have to do things their way. For instance Snyder wanted an clean fight between B and S instead of getting that, the studio wanted to show horn in wonderwoman and justice league. I remember reading the villain was supposed to be Luthor and Metallo. But what could Snyder do. He can't write checks on his own. Neither can Scott. Prometheus had executive produces and producers beside Scott, all of which could at any time, fire him from the project. So to get the studio back on his side he had to agree to some things. A rehash. Studios loves a familiar thing, even if it's boring. Do the same thing, again, and we'll think about it.

Alien is one of my favourite films. I love it so much I stuck up for Prometheus after first seeing it (my second viewing changed my mind dramatically), but Covenant looks like utter dreck. I just don't understand the need to build this huge mythos around the Alien franchise, the original was about the exploitation of the working class at the hands of a rampantly greedy corporatist system, with themes of psycho-sexual terror and... whatever, it wasn't this guff is all I'm saying.

A lot of the reason why mysterious shit is so cool is because the blank spaces our minds fill in is so much more cool than whats put on screen. It's like magic tricks, once you know how it works, the wonder just ain't there. But occasionally, the way a trick works is so cool, that the trick becomes cooler after learning how it works. Its just very rarely do films explain mysterious shit in an equally engrossing manner. I think mystery is good in small doses, but you shouldn't be reliant on it like LOST, and when the explanations come calling, they better be fucking good ones and not asspull giant men.

Prometheus was far more mysterious, I was disappointed to see all the monsters in it just lead to the xenomorph rather than being it's own entity, but still that was at the very end. Mystery is what made the alien franchise so good in the first place and Prometheus did a decent job of recapturing that.

The problem with convernant is it's just a sequel and we know exact what will happen and how they will die.

They're probably not the same group as the guys from Prometheus. There's already been loads of speculation from that movie that the Engineers were split into two factions: The more human looking ones that go and seed other planets with their DNA and the militaristic faction that have altered their own bodies as you can see the Engineer's suit looks like his integrated into him. The Engineers shown in the pictures from Covenant look more human so it's possible they were the more peaceful faction, but since David would not have known this openly attacks them thinking they're the same as the ones that attacked them.
