They are not really Christians at all. They are Christians in name, but Atwood makes it very clear in the novel that they are not in any way actually upholding even the basic strictures of the gospel.

It's more like the top 1% wanted to throw of the yolk of the government, and used Christian fundamentalism as a smokescreen for them to do so. Unfortunately for the top 1%, the unwashed masses they rely on to fuel their anti-government revolution actually believe all the bullshit they feed them, and then the mega-rich are forced to obey their own highly regressive code of morals or be publicly lynched by their own army of uneducated zealots.

It's very interesting commentary, actually: the zealots think the rich run the new government, but the rich know that the zealots could entirely annihilate their asses at any time, and the laws are all based on the wishes of the zealots, not the desires of the rich. And in fact, in the epilogue, it makes it clear that part of what made the Republic of Gilead so terrible was that no one was actually running it. The rich couldn't without fear of reprisal, and the zealots were too stupid and uneducated to rule, so they just kept existing in limbo, not progressing at all, until they finally collapsed in on themselves after too many internal witch-hunts and ideological purity tests.

The articles I've read about this show from liberals talking about "Trump's America" employ some massive mental gymnastics.

I've even seen some try to tie in the "Muslim Ban".

I saw one article on Salon where they brought up the woman's march and how relevant this was...While not even bothering to address the fact that one of the leaders of the march believes Saudi Arabia (a country whose treatment of women is worse than what is depicted in the book/show) is the "most feminist of countries".

It's strange too, because when we read the book or watched the movie back in Ye Olden Days, it was always as an example of what Muslim women were suffering through in places like Afghanistan. But apparently now that's....feminist?

Not sure if they changed it for the show, but it's basically about a future America (so Christianity instead of Islam) that's exactly like post revolution Iran or post Soviet ousting Afghanistan. Gilead is on the nose--explicitly because the founders of the society wanted it to be that way. They were elitists who thought the poor wouldn't get the memo unless they spelled it out in huge block letters.

Atwood is well aware that Gilead is an on the nose name to use, and therefore uses it in a much more subtle way.

If you want to talk about on the nose symbolism entirely by the author and not by the "author" (since the book is told in the form of a college professor/speaker reading aloud a diary of one of the wives a few decades after the fall of Gilead), then you'd have to discuss the name Offred--except that you also do not get how that is on the nose, since you haven't read the book.

In short: read the damn book before spouting off. It makes you look like a blowhard who needs for their uneducated opinion to be heard and acknowledged at all times.
