I've never seen him in anything except Mr. Brooks and I enjoyed his performance in it.

The same thing that happens to all comedians that only appeal to a certain group in a certain time period. Those people grow up, and the comedian fails to adapt his material to either continue to appeal to them, or to appeal to the people replacing them.

pretty much this. he ran the line between adult only content and whacky shit to make kids laugh, and then after his major successes he got edgier and did only sex jokes and nobody liked it. he tanked hard. probably the single greatest example of a comic one hit wonder. it's been long enough now that I bet he could re release his old material or do a comeback show repeating most of his old jokes and it would be more successful than anything he's done in the last decade
