>I've just read an incredible article where "The Handmaid's Tale", a sub-par piece of science-fi trash, is defended by its author. The author, who rightly should be apologizing for her execrable prose, not only defends it but calls it "timely". The book has been made in to some sort of cable mini-series. I'm Canadian, so had to suffer through this book as a young person. It's one of those cheap, dystopian tracts. The difference with this one is it has a deeply paranoid feminist look into the future. The story is as impossible as most of these " frightening looks into the future". But to call it timely, when the possibility of this fiction ever becoming fact even more of a joke, is just a cynical cash-grab.

Is he right?

>Atwood continues to argue that all of the scenarios offered in The Handmaid's Tale have actually occurred in real lifeā€”in an interview she gave regarding Oryx and Crake, Atwood maintains that "As with The Handmaid's Tale, I didn't put in anything that we haven't already done, we're not already doing, we're seriously trying to do, coupled with trends that are already in progress.... So all of those things are real, and therefore the amount of pure invention is close to nil."[20] Atwood was also known to carry around newspaper clippings to her various interviews to support her fiction's basis in reality.[21]

Jesus christ, I haven't visited that shithole in years. Started out as a place for overly critical reviews of shitty Hollywood movies but it slowly morphed into political discourse over time when liberal proles built a nest in the comments section and just never left. From what I remember the guy that owns the place was raised by two gay dads and made a point to shit up the comment section whenever it would veer away from the liberal hivemind.

He's right, and he said it better than I ever could.

I've been cringing every time I hear someone call this show "timely" since women have more rights now then ever before, and they are even starting to subvert men, but somehow we are apparently on the verge of enslaving them? Pure feminist propaganda.
>>
The book is pretty overwrought politically but I like it as simple sci-fi. I think she does a good job of describing a fictional world. I know I'm supposed to be freaked by the christfaggotry and knee dampness but reading about Ofglen's calm & regimented world soothed my autism. She really should have left the bullshit academic conference at the end out though, an ambiguous end would be better.

I like Moss and her walleyed charms so I'll give it a watch. Felt a bit burned by TMITHC so hopefully it's a better adaptation.

>But to call it timely, when the possibility of this fiction ever becoming fact even more of a joke, is just a cynical cash-grab.
He's not wrong, but neither is she - Christian Dominionists aren't joking. She didn't really go into theology in the book which is a shame. She made it seem like no one really believed which made her point and undercut it at the same time.

Broheim, it's called a dystopian novel for a reason. Just because it might not seem likely today doesn't mean it couldn't happen in some form in the future. People laughed at Orwell and Huxley for their books being ridiculous and over the top, yet now we live in a hybrid of the two, with mass media dulling our senses and privacy being a joke thanks to the government spying on us through datamining.

>Handmaids tale is only about christians because Atwood knew she couldnt sell it to liberals if it was about muslims, but make no mistake, The Handmaids tale is all about sharia law.
>t. born after 2000
No, it's not. It was published in 1985. Back then (non-)radical Islam didn't matter except for Israel and it certainly was not hyped they way it is today. She was reacting to the rise of a new conservative coalition in the US after decades of left-liberal consensus. They were truly frightened by their inability to stop them politically as well as their (now somewhat absurd) rhetoric.

It's fine if you apply it to the current day, but Norm's criticisms still ring true. Most Muslims are not jihadists and do not want to live under strict sharia in a global Caliphate.

Yes. The main character's daughter is taken from her, she goes through indoctrination at a camp and is then assigned to a prominent couple who cannot conceive as their "handmaiden". Her only real job is to conceive and bear a child for the couple. If she fails to conceive she will be replaced.

Planning for this show must go back several years. So was it going to be timely because with a newly elected President Hillary the feminist grievance industry must be stoked for political gain? >>
>>82136385

Surrogate are who women who choose to do so for financial compensation, and they potentially could tap out of the contract if they want to keep the baby, and it's not their entire function in society. That's the exact opposite of how the Handmaiden program works in the book.

>>
>>82135813
>"muh morals, degeneracy this degeneracy that"

Depends where the source of "muh morals, degeneracy this, degeneracy that" comes from.

It certainly doesn't come from bible thunping fundamentalists. This is something different. Everyone who's been on 4chan has already passed through the athiest/agnostic phase, which means no one here genuinely thinks there's a bearded sky man who controls the weather.

This call against "degeneracy" is a reaction to the open sexual/lifestyle choices of people. It's become the reaction to the norm of today.

You're not looking at a group of old outdated super Christian people screaming for morality with right-wingers following behind them. You're looking at a bunch of young contrarians denouncing current society norms (claiming it to be degeneracy) with old outdated fundamentalists saying in the back "Yeah! I was warning about this the whole time!"

To place the entire blame on "retarded right-wingers who just can't keep up with the times of progressive society" have failed to see the next step of the progressive society, which is the ever changing view of what's cool. Viewpoints trend and are supplanted by another viewpoint that can dominate over it.

I mean look at the election.

Progressivism is now the authority to rebel against. Being progressive was literally a trend to make yourself look good. No one actually followed through on what they said. Look at all of social media. People talk the talk and never walk the walk.

Now people want to talk about something controversial, which isn't supporting transgendered people. It's now controversial to denounce transgendered people.

Don't you get it

George Carlin had a great bit about that in the 80s or early 90s where he talked a famous reverend who was advocating banning content from being played in radio because it was explicit or whatever and thus ought to be censored so that people wouldn't be corrupted.

Yeah it's perfectly natural to spend you whole life in jail for killing a family of three because you sneezed while driving.

Driving car is a huge responsibility and should be treated as such.

No, Brave New World is what we've embraced. We gave away our freedom for trifles and pointless entertainment. We've become docile creatures who desire short term happiness to fulfillment later.

1984 is never going to happen. We won't be a police state because what we have now works for maintaining the status quo. Plus, the moral of 1984 is inherently flawed. People in power aren't going to "stamp a boot on a human fac forever," because they're not cartoonis monsters. They just want to keep being in power.
>>
>>82135305
It was published in Reagan's time- the idiot who believed in his wife's astrology signals, conversed with the most detestable moral majority crazies, and heated up the Cold War through inflammatory acts. You guys really underestimate the wrongheadedness of certain christians

>We've become docile creatures who desire short term happiness to fulfillment later.

Is there a point in history when humans weren't like that?
>>
>>82135714
Ironically the nationalistic wave sweeping across the west has more to do with Islam than Christianity.

Oppressing people in order keeping yourself in power, just for the sake of having that power, is its own type of cartoonish villainy we see time and time again in people who rise to the top and then don't want to transfer that power to other people.

I'm late to this thread but some of you may be interested to know that Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale is incredibly derivative of the much older "Revolt In 2020" by Robert Heinlein. Seriously they have the exact same fucking setting and plot, the only difference is that Atwood's book tells the same story from a woman's point of view. Atwood is a hack whose spec-fic books are ripped off older and better SF writers
>>
>>82142223
Good to know, I never heard of this before.

Was she ever accused of it in a public manner?
>>
>>82139090
More like people didn't have the ability to live like that which is maybe better. We're all junkies we just gotta keep the crack out of reach

Only by me, online

Correction: Heinlein's book is actually called Revolt in 2100

>After 8 years of the most liberal times in the US and the world
The 30s-70s were the liberal years. The Democrats abandoned that platform in the 90s. I agree Obama was a left-liberal but he did not govern as one. Not at all.
>>
>>82142409
>>82142223

By the breif description it sounds to be only similar in that it shares the Christian fundamentalists take over the country premise.
>>
>>82142877

In the book, powerful men have harems of women kept in exactly the same conditions as Ofgen in The Handmaid's Tale, for "sex in the missionary position for the purpose of reproduction" only of course. They even wear the same clothes (nun style outfits). There are many other close similarities which I can't bothered to list. Like the underground escape route, etc. If you at all interested in SF give it a read. - written 1953!!!!

>Atwood was also known to carry around newspaper clippings to her various interviews to support her fiction's basis in reality.
This is autistic as fuck and I love it.
>>
>>82143053
Yep, and you know, for the record, I've never even heard of a Christian leader who says that sex is only for the purpose of procreation. Maybe they're out there, but I've never heard of them.

I don't know but Norm's taste in literature is shit.
for some reason people love to shit up /lit/ with this fag's opinions, so it's nice to see them migrating a bit.
