My point is that the plot doesn't primarily depend on the Vietnam war, the setting and time period are secondary to a re telling of 'Hearts of Darkness'.

It's purely surface and aesthetic, it doesn't really need to be set in the Vietnam war to function as a film.

I can't quite remember, but Willard gives Chef a time frame for when to call in the air strike, but then gets killed (by Kurtz I think).

But he was with Kurtz for a while, I don't know if the redux had more scenes there or not, but Willard was kind of out of it for a good long while and Kurtz comes and reads to him with loads of children looking on.
