Not a bad explanation, but like most Eva explanations, it barely scratches the surface and jumps to a few incorrect conclusions.

The first paragraph is fine. Perfect even. Only comment is a lot of that info isn't from Eva itself, but instead from supplimental material. I'd leave most of it out because it's not really necessary for someone just watching the show.

Second paragraph I noticed a couple things. First being that shinji doesn't "deny the situation". The congratulations scene is quite the opposite, it's him accepting the realities of life, both the good and the bad, essentially being the exact moment he rejects instromentality. You can even see this reflected in End of Evangelion. Right here, as matter of fact: https://youtu.be/z4-Q5mH6EaM
"I want to see them again. At the time, I know my feelings were real" and then smash cut to Lilith being killed. Notice the cloud backdrop and image with shinji and his friends. It's a direct tie-in to episode 26s ending. They happen at the same time.

Also regarding shinji strangling Asuka, while I do agree with your theory, it's still unconfirmed exactly why Anno had him strangling her. There is just no straight answer so it shouldn't be painted like you are. It will always be up for interpretation

>>
>>82108791
This has always been true for every board, really. /tv/ has the best anime threads, /co/ has the best video game threads, /v/ has the best comic and cartoon threads etc.

It's because the users of the boards the threads belong to are so fucking jaded they could never have a genuine conversation.
>>
>>82108835
when you ignore every serious movie discussion thread because you're a huge anime and capeshit watching pleb, it makes sense you might think that
>>
>>82108853
Kek. Are you seriously going to debate that /co/ and /v/ don't have better Godzilla threads, capeshit threads, etc? I'll give you this, /tv/ is the only board with posters experienced enough to properly discuss arthouse and a lot of impactful films, but those threads are so few and far between it hardly is worth noting
>>
>>82108916

>The congratulations scene is quite the opposite, it's him accepting the realities of life
But he hasn't accepted it, he is still in Instrumentality.
I don't recall anything in 26 implying he is going to undo or fix what has happened to the world.
>>
>>82108977
because the show isnt about "what has happened to the world" it's about someone coming to terms with how to cope with existence
>>
>>82109022
This. The last 2 episodes were a character study.
>>82108977
It's not Shinji coming to terms with instrumentality, its Shinji coming to terms with who he is and that he should accept himself, flaws and all.
>>
>>82108977
Basically this:
>>82109022

We don't even know the world is ending in the show because that's not really the important part. We see the context of it in EoE when we realize that is him coming g to terms with himself and the world, realizing you need the bad to have the good, and rejecting instromentality
>>
>>82108977
>He is still in instrumentality
It's been a while, but isn't he only still in there for a couple more minutes after that scene? It's basically just wrapping up and he's getting some final closure from his mother before the beach scene. Even if it's not the exact end of instrumentality, it's the catalyst that causes it to end
>>

Old /tg/ will forever be the holy grail of 4chan posting. 4chan in general before 2007 when the userbase was about 1% of what it is now was so massively different. I miss the days of being able to follow every thread on /a/ or /v/ because the board actually moved slow enough to do so. Now we have 3x the number of boards and you can barely formulate a reply longer than a paragraph on most of them before they 404.

In the rebuilds, there is a scene where Asuka tries to slap Rei but is stopped. She sees the bandaids on Rei's hand greatly outnumber her own. They both got hurt trying to cook for Shinji, but Rei hurt herself a lot more because she is a silly autist. This makes Asuka decide to go pilot the new experimental evangelion on the day of the dinner because she realized Rei was willing to hurt herself to make Shinji happy. This is later realized when Rei gets absorbed into the angel trying to make sure Shinji never had to fight again.

In end of Evangelion, when Rei is going around breaking down A.T. fields, she only ever manifests herself as people who have died. Perhaps she can appear as the living, but that is not shown. She appears as Misato, Ritsuko, and Asuka, among others, who all have passed on before the climax.

For most people, love would be enough for your to open the wall of your heart and let her in, as it did for the two employees who had crushes on their bosses. But for other people, she has to use other tricks. She basically just brute forced her way into that one guy's field using fear as the emotional vehicle. For Gendo, well, I think it was guilt, but they also didn't take him into instrumentality, his corpse was the only one left on the ground that didn't evaporate out of the whole planet.

And for Shinji, it was anger. Rei appeared in the form of Asuka and got him to strangle her.

Childhood traumas and fears are often manifest themselves as fetishes in adults. Fear and sexual arousal are tied very closely together, resulting in such fetishes as bondage. In Asuka's case, her trauma revolved around her mother strangling her, and this left a deep impression in her psyche, which guided her every move and action. The brash, brazen, and boastful Asuka was all a subconscious manifestion of her hidden desire. It was her way of getting what she truly wanted. Getting desperate, she tried to telegraph this more deliberately to Shinji, when she forcibly kissed him and held his nose shut, but became more aggravated than ever when he didn't get her message. Shinji only finally realized what Asuka had been seeking the whole time once he entered her mind and saw a fight they once had, but it ended differently in Asuka's head. He, for the first time, saw what Asuka had been after the whole time. When he is born again on the shores of the red sea, Asuka is beside him, and he rolls over and wraps his hands tightly around her neck, and she caresses him gently, for finally providing what she had longed for all this time.

I would go hiking with Asuka in the winding hills of Japan and she would sprain her ankle and I would have to give her a piggy back ride back down to the cabin. Slowly, she would slip down, from resting her hands on my shoulder and propping herself up, closer and closer, until she wrapped her arms around my chest and her red hair gently drapes around my head like a curtain, cutting off sight and sound from anything besides her soft breathing in my ear. Slowly, one of her soft hands would rise up and caress my cheek, before slowly guiding it to her waiting pillowy pink lip's embrace and kiss me sweetly.

Dub is pretty shaky, some characters sound great, some sound very bad, the recording quality is all over the place. The translation also has a couple of mistakes that are still confusing people, better to watch newer fansubs, not those made by the ADV hacks.

The End of Evangelion dub is worse, the main cast is the same and they have some very good moments, but the direction, less important characters and sound design almost ruin the film.

Rebuild dubbings are pretty good, much more consistent than the original and the best actors from the OG dub are back.

Get a nice blu ray rip of the show and EoE from nyaa.se, something from Sephirotic or 2d4u, their releases are glorious.

Yes, an Evangelion did.

The melodrama isn't even the biggest problem, it's the disgusting amount of shameless padding that completely insults the viewer's intelligence and shows no regard for their investment in the show. There are scenes from the first few episodes that end up getting 5+ recap flashbacks right in the middle of later episodes, which is unacceptable.

So anime characters don't stand in one place and make 5 minute speeches to explain their , entire morality code? Fuck, it's even more true in Evangelion, due to its budgetary limitations.

How about repeated instances of it happening, regardless of the genre?

Anime/manga writers are notorious for turning their characters into mouthpieces. I can't even begin to remember the number of people who called GitS """"smart"""" when it does nothing more than give 101 philosophy speeches that are just shy from turning into a lecture.

What baffles me is that you're denying this. On a fucking EVANGELION thread.

Gravity is a scientific theory. It is not a theory in the colloquial sense of the word. Sturgeon's law is someone's opinion and just has "law" in the name. It is not an actual law.

it's always been a hidden truth that /tv/ and /v/ have the best anime discussions, hands down
>>
>>82113464
I was talking about your claim that the visual are mostly trash.

People normally talk mostly about the story, whether it's anime, live action or literature.

Directors are more important in anime than writers, and get mentioned more than writers even in general discussion and coverage. It's live action TV where writers are kings.
>>
>>82113502
The visuals are clearly less sophisticated than the best TV and film, and as a narrative medium it's all made-to-measure tropey gimmick nonsense. There's not much going for it other than people who culturally fetishize Japan and also hate human beings so they can't bear to see real actors on screen.
>>

Anime is visually much more sophisticated than live action TV. On average this is true for live action cinema as well. Everything in anime is manually put together through drawing and painting without having to consider practical limitations, and the animation limitations that TV anime has had have also incentivized a focus on visuals.

>made-to-measure tropey gimmick nonsense
It is this statement that is nonsense. "Tropey" in particular is a dead giveaway that someone has no idea what they're talking about.

>There's not much going for it other than people who culturally fetishize Japan and also hate human beings so they can't bear to see real actors on screen.
Anime is made for the Japanese market and has nothing to do with viewers hating real actors.

What makes you say that? Is there something about hand drawn art that would cause it to have worse cinematography than a movie on traditional film?

>>82113622
I don't think most people would debate it's better, but it is much more flexible thanks to not being bound by reality. Stuff like pic related would never be possible with actors and sets without an exceptionally large budget.
Again, that doesn't make it BETTER, but it's at the very minimum the same

In terms of composition and visual direction Evangelion is on the level of good film and better than most television. Especially towards the end of the series and in EoE when the show becomes primarily about character psychology. A lot of the shots are set up in such a way that visually reinforces a relationship or a characters mental state using composition, color and blocking.
>>
>>82113854
It's not difficult to be better than most television, and there is a reason why you almost never hear anything about TV directors or cinematography in TV shows.

This is a completely unrelated question but does anyone know what those low line-post next to train tracks (seen in bottom right pic) are supposed to be for?
They look like mini power-lines, but the actual cables look way too skinny for that to be the case and they often appear way too unkempt and many times knocked over (like in that image) which makes me think they couldn't possibly be electric cabling. I've never been able to follow along train tracks long enough to see if they lead anywhere though.

Sorry, but this question has been bugging me for months and google has gotten me nowhere.
