Can we get a surround sound/audio setup thread?
My decade old Bose speakers just died and I'm looking for advice on what sort of setup I should aim for.
I'm thinking of getting a Bose soundbar to start, then adding more speakers as budget allows.
Any advice/recommendations? It will be mainly for watching kino, so no pretentious /mu/ crap plz.
Anybody? The soundbar in question is $999 from JB-HI-FI btw

As an audiophile this really activates my almonds

a fool and his money are soon parted

Well, advice then? I know sound is extremely important but I'll put my hand up and admit I don't know much about specific brands and technical specs.

Buy a home audio/ theatre magazine
Jus buy headphones and watch Kino on PC

>asking /tv/ for A/V setup
>not realizing half the posters are 12-15 year olds who don't watch movies and are only here for memes
>not realizing the other half are idiots and normies who watch terrible streams/torrents on their laptops

I felt like I gave a good suggestion

>terrible streams
so true. i don't understand why they do this in 2017.

seriously, they will know more about this than /tv/

If you get a sound bar it makes no sense to get more speakers later, sound bars simulate surround sound.
Get an AV receiver, good subwoofer, center and LR speakers for a start. Yamaha is a nice brand.

Don't. Get an Onkyo Dolby Atmos/DTS:X 11.2 receiver instead and buy five speakers and one subwoofer then fill in the blanks when your budget increases.
Anyways, who Dolby Atmos/DTS:X 11.2 master race here?

idiot.

Well there's a lot to said in this field.
But I wouldn't expect much from a soundbar.
Having that many drivers in a small width is no real benefit.
I personally have a pair of dynadio bm5mkii''s
They aren't made for movies in the sense that it's only 2 drivers (4 if you include tweeters).
But they can be eerie to watch movies with.
I was watching the hobbit a few years ago, and when gandalf opened Baggins door and walked in on the right hand of the screen it legit sounded like someone opened my door and walked in.
Thanks for the replies.
Just spent an hour trawling the Whirlpool forums and have a much better idea now.
It's a daunting barrier to entry though trying to understand what's good vs what's not. The dopey bitch at JB who kept herding me back to the Bose wasn't a big help.
Too loud for me. I won't be able to hear myself think

Please don't waste your money on soundbars.
Please don't waste your money on anything from Bose.
What is your budget? What is your playback device? If torrents, which encodes are you mostly downloading? Is your room even suitable for a surround sound setup?
You said nothing.
Also you're better off asking this question in /g/ than here, most people here watch movies on a 13 inch Toshiba laptop with one earbud on on a random stream with 96kbps audio.
