Wow, is there any movie /tv/ does not hate? I really liked "The Sacrament". Genuine, well acted, really disturbing "found footage". Only Wests "House of the Devil" worked even better.

That was a huge red flag for me when I saw the opening credits but thankfully it turned out to actually be a good movie.

I thought it was being set up so Father gave everyone the potion so he could just take all the leftover money with no witnesses and start anew scamming folks somewhere

For me, it was really saved by the scenes of the poisoning. I thought it was really brutal 2bh, and appreciated it for being effective without any supernatural elements. Don't see that often in found footage.
