That water had stagnated and would have amassed bacteria that wouldn't be found in flowing water. The aliens very well might have been in desperation and needed to take to Earth despite the risks. The real problem with Signs is that the supposed God that Riggs loses faith in set all of this up to give him his faith back. He already had absolute faith in God, so God chose to kill his wife, wait a few years, then torment them with aliens and shit... Joaquin Phoenix lost his baseball career for this too, the girl had severe dehydration, and the boy had terrible asthma. The dog had to die, also. Just so Payback could get his faith back, which he only lost because God killed his wife. That's the fucking problem with Signs. I mean if you want you could say it's criticism of faith in general, but I think it's just M. Night needed to make another movie that year with a whatatweest.

I liked it.
I'm personally fascinated by DID, so checked i out recently. Hadn't been paying any attention to it, at all, so I was even surprised that M Night directed it, ha.
It's not the most accurate portrayal of DID, but getting further into the movie, when they started getting supernatural with the Beast, I realized that it wasn't meant to be realistic, and felt reassured.
I never saw Unbreakable, but further reading about it cleared the ending up.
Looking forward to this odd superhero movie.
