They were the last living humans and the only remaining scientific and military authorities were crazy. Nothing odd about it given the scenario.

Think about what it'd be like to be thrown in a high stress situation where your friends are slowly dwindling, dying all around you for years. You witness some of their deaths even. Your life is constantly in the balance. Would you really be the same polite person you are now? Most people would lose a little of themselves along the way.

Pretty much this. The different factions each had their own way of dealing with what was happening. The civilians drank, the military shot shit up and treated everyone else like shit, and the scientists just fucked off in their labs and studied inane shit.

The utter hopelessness pretty much resorted everyone to the most base and mundane examples of "people". They were essentially zombies.

The scientists were literally on the verge of being able to train and teach the zombies. Even if they were the literal last humans on earth and they would have died before it had any real effect, the potential to reverse the loss of humanity was invaluable. Besides what the fuck else was there to do?

The whole operation was a waste of time because even if bud was seemingly domesticated when hungry he'd probably attack someone. But nevermind the millions of them you'd have to train. And the meat you'll never be able to feed them aside your own dead

day was bleak as shit because even if they spent so long trapped in the bunker and now they're in a paradise without zombies they're still horribly alone in the world, I probably would've aced myself not soon after
