He was never loved by anyone growing up, he had to literally abandon his identity and steal someone else's in order to achieve anything. His success is built on lies and deceit and all of his relationships (except Anna Draper and maybe briefly with Megan) are superficial and ultimately meaningless. He's successful on the surface but he's been dead inside for a long time

yeah it doesn't justify the shitty stuff he does but the show wouldn't be interesting if all the characters were logical, rational people who never made poor choices
