The first season flew under my radar because i've been prejudiced against SyFy shows for a few years. But enough people told me the show is good that I watched the first season right before second season started airing. I loved the first season and was pleasantly surprised.
Then the second season started and it was kind of meh, and then the tail end of the second season was just shit-tier., exactly what I expected from SyFy to begin with.
So what we're going to get now is a budget constrained, slapdash, pity-driven third season, and the show will die a slow painful death.
Also, as much love as I have for Adam Savage, this was the most gratuitous, over the top cameo I have ever seen. I've never rolled my eyes harder than when watching that.

in such a scenario martian soldiers would presumably be in ridiculously good shape

Errinwright is the Undersecretary for Executive Affairs (no 2 of the whole UN). She is the Assistant Undersecretary (so number 3) - and in season 1 you do see her taking orders from him several times.

I think it's just that once the protomolecule crisis / martian escalation starts, formal rank becomes less important. There are legit conspiracies going on, people are being assassinated, and both of them have their own agents trying to advance their agendas. There's also the point that she is a career bureaucrat so has a secure position, while he has to be elected at some point so presumably has less flexibility. Even given that though, you see decision about military strikes and stuff being made by him in the end - she is just an influential advisor.

She becomes the superior once he loses Mao and starts freaking out. Even before the confession scene he just doesn't have a long term plan anymore so can be led - and after that he's pretending that he doesn't really trust himself anymore.

It's great stuff.

This is what happens in the books when they prepared for the ambush by bringing her suit with her from the fucking start
