Listen to the commentary track on the DC from scott. He outright says the theatrical edition is the definitive cut of the movie, but he included the DC just to give fans an idea of what didn't make the cut.
I highly recommend listening to his commentary btw. Super informative about the filmmaking process. He also says he personally counted the Xeno's screen time in frames, and did his best to cut out everything he could so it would almost attack you on a subliminal level.

To be fair, this was my second viewing of it, and it was the Director's cut, and I overall felt that the movie had too much padding. The first time I watched it, I thought the movie was good, but really slow, on this viewing I had no problem with it, I thought it moved at a good pace up to that point.
Maybe it felt like padding because I knew what's going to happen, I don't know.

I got the BluRay box set last year, and it was the first time I had seen Alien in the better part of a decade and I was literally shocked at how fucking good it was. Also the transfer is incredible. I felt like I was seeing it for the first time.
As a kid I always thought it was boring and I preferred Aliens. I've come a full 180 on it.

Alien 3 is the one that you need to watch the work print cut (no DC because Fincher renounced the movie when he walked off during post production).

Seriously, listen to the commentary. The movie was getting slow and a little boring, so they added a "Russian Spy" character. (To add drama, make one of your characters a Russian spy out of nowhere.
