I ask this question after watching the prequels. While they are tighter paced and better directed, there's something missing from the OT.
There is a lack of characterization. Everyone fulfills their archetype, but they don't do much else. There is also a lack of scope and scale. The prequels gave a great sense of the world's breadth, and each civilization was detailed and cultured. In the OT, the locales see briefly visited and then quickly forgotten. To sum it up, I feel that the prequels are much more of a complete artpiece, though sacrificing only a bit of polish.

Anyone else feel like ROTJ is the best Star Wars film?

>and each civilization was detailed and cultured.
just the cantina scene in ANH has far more interesting aliens that I want to know more about than all of the cgi crap from the prequels. jabba the hutt and chewbacca are vastly superior to any prequel original aliens.

>no
Yeah they're pretty great movies, anon.
It's not art on the level of Beethoven's 9th or the Sistine Chapel, but they are remarkable motion pictures. Like, everything that makes a movie good is present and accounted for.
The prequels are awful films imo. I feel happy for all the younger kids who grew up enjoying them, and the clone wars show and shit. They're fucking laughably bad though, and even the special effects are starting to age like milk.

I like Empire better, but I understand the inclination. The final setpiece with Luke/Vader/Sheev is probably the best scene in the entire saga.

Compared to other movies and trilogies, is Star Wars standard with ESB just being an above average movie or are the movies really some of the best movies ever made?

The space battle along makes it rival ESB

I'm really glad you summed it up at the end there, anon. I was having trouble keeping up.
In answer to your question, yes. The OT is pretty great and the prequels are mostly trash. A bunch of green screened vistas do not give the world more scope and scale, and you are an idiot for thinking so.

Some of the best genre movies ever made. They don't hold a candle to the big gun movies about the actual human condition, but the OT flicks are huge fish in the fantasy pond.

Your points are valid but that's what makes them the superior movies. Instead of relying on lore, CGI gimmicks, side-characters and worldbuilding, the OT has a very intimate, small world kind of feel to it. You care about the characters because one of them is always on screen, and the plot isn't convoluted with twists and side turns. Sure this epic fantasy is unfolding for you, but it's only being told from the perspective of half a dozen people you've come to know.
