how the fuck do you even get into gintama, at a glance it's just a parody series but there's this weird sengoku era storyline with legit deaths

I haven't watched it either, someone told me it was the Japanese Simpsons, which didn't exactly leave a good taste in my mouth. I've seen a few funny scenes I liked in youtube clips, but it's like Doctor Who, not sure how to tackle it, probably never will.

It's not really time efficient for the amount of laughs you will get. First of all, the first 20 episodes are really boring and unfunny. 1 out of every 5 episodes will be the funniest shit you've seen in anime. 1 out 10 will be a cringe inducing "serious" anime arc for le character development but it's always terrible. There's a lot of missed opportunity and hit or miss jokes and a lot of japanese humor and celebrity type shit. If you like the characters is a good way to entertain yourself for a couple months with 300+ episodes or whatever.
