the movie opens with the GOTG protecting some ultrapowerful batteries from a dimension worm of some sort, the fight basically happens in the background while groot dances to 80s music. they kill the monster and are rewarded by glenn close gold lady, who hands over nebula (restrained) to them. as they are leaving rocket steals the batteries, which causes the gold people to chase them. they almost escape through a "quantum meteor" field but the gold people catch them - but kurt russell saves them. they crash land on some forest planet and the ship is wrecked. kurt russell lands next to them and reveals he is memelord's father. pratt doesn't believe him at first but gamora convinces pratt to trust russell. pratt, gamora and bautista go with russell to planet ego and rocket groot and nebula stay behind. meanwhile the gold lady has hired yondu and company to kind and kill the racoon for stealing the batteries - she doesn't care about them but cares about her honour. yondu however is confronted by sly, who berates him for breaking the ravagers code. yondu's followers are angry at him being weak and plan mutiny. when they arrive on the forst planet to catch rocket, rocket easily and comedically defeats most of them, but the whistle arrow thing stops him. But nebula convinces groot to let her help, she shoots the thing of yondu's head then stuns rocket, causing yondu's mutinous crew to decide that some guy called taser face will be in charge, they kidnap rocket and groot and take nebula too. there is a scene of rocket making fun of taser face and said taser face nearly kills him until nebula protests, she wants rocket and yondu kept alive so she can claim their bounties. nebula leaves in a ship to chase gamora down to kill her. meanwhile starlord and the others have arrived on kurt russell's planet, which he created himself- he tells them his life story how he is basically a god and made himself a human form.

russell has a pet bugfu who has empathic powers, she can read people's emotions by touching them and can also modify them to an extent, one thing she does is helps puts russell to sleep because his mind is so overwhelming he can't sleep on his own or something. lots of hilarious dialog between bugfu and bautista. memelord is being taught by his father how to use the god powers, as pratt is half god or "celestial" he can access the powers of the core of the planet which is russell's true form. gamora thinks something is up and tells pratt, he gets angry at her, there is arguing and she wanders off. while she's away her sister arrives on the planet and starts shooting at her with the spaceship, there's a big fight between them that ends with gamora saving nebula from the exploding ship and then nebula defeating gamora, she didn't want to kill her though, just beat her as some sort of catharsis from their childhood when thanos would make them fight and gamora always won. meanwhile on yondus ship rocket and yondu have this montage of epic hilarity getting groot to steal the upgraded headthing for youndu so they can escape, after bringing the wrong thing over and over, eventually one of yondu's crew who remained loyal to him (idk the name but he has metal teeth and kind of crazy eyes) helps groot and gets the headthing. yondu and rocket are then able to escape, they kill everyone on the ship except for this guy who helped them, then separate the cockpit and fly towards ego while blowing up the rest of the ship, but taser face before he dies is able to communicate with the gold lady and tell her where they are going. bugfu has been acting weird and reveals to bautista that starlord is in trouble - russell is about to achieve his goal. gamora and nebula get back to the main area of the planet and bugfu tells her that russell has already got to pratt.

russell tells pratt that his reason for existing is to take over all life in the universe and replace it wth himself. russell's human form has been travelling around various planets and impregnating women of different species in order to try to produce an offspring that has celestial powers - up until now though, none of the offspring have been viable, so they are all killed. forgot to mention when nebula and gamora were fighting they found a cave full of bones - the dead children of kurt russell. russell uses some weird power to brainwash pratt, but when he reveals that he is the one who killed pratt's mother (so russell wouldnt have to worry about being in love) pratt snaps out of the brainwash, leading russell to instead use some weird tentacles to trap him and drain his power. when this happens, a seed that russell planted on every planet he has visited begins to sprout, and change into a rapidly expanding blue goo that destroys everything in its path. gamora, bautisa and nebula rush in and try to stop russell but are ineffective. at this moment rocket and yondu arrive in the ship and fly it right through the roof and crush russel's human form, distracting him enough for pratt to escape the tentacles, and they all get in the ship and fly off, however they dont leave as pratt says they need to destroy russell's core or he will take over the universe. they use lasers to drill into the ground and reach the center of the planet, but russell comes to and chases them with the weird tentacles, and a gigantic rock version of himself. bugfu uses her powers to put him to sleep temporarily and rocket starts using the lasers to drill through the thick metal coating around the core. however at this moment the fleet of the gold people arrives, and they have to use the lasers in a sparkly light show to destroy them all with the drilling unfinished. one of the lasers injures bugfu and she can't keep russell asleep any longer.

russell starts using his tentacle powers again and fucking everyone up. rocket takes the batteries he stole from the gold people and makes them into a megaton bomb, and he and starlord try to take it into the core, but there's still too much metal so it wont work, rocket gives it to groot and the scene from the trailer happens, there are small tunnels that only groot fits through that lead to the core. russell is far too strong for everyone and his tentacles own them all and the planet begins going full namek. bautista takes the now unconscious bugfu to the surface and rocket calls yondu's follower from earlier to pick them up. gamora and nebula make their way to the surface via a rising rock pillar. rocket, yondu and starlord keep fighting russell but are losing badly. the tentacles surround everyone and start draining starlords power again, but he taps into his emotions and is able to fight back and use the power of the core himself. the tentacles are all disabled and bautisa, bugfu, gamora and nebula board the ship. rocket gives his last spacesuit and rocketpack to youndu, then collects groot who has placed the bomb, and those two also fly up to the ship. russell and pratt have a great big epic battle both using celestial powers, pratt can't beat him but is just stalling for time so the bomb blows up the core, which it eventually does. russell dies and the planet begins to explode. gamora tries to leave the ship so she can rescue pratt but rocket stuns her. yondu grabs pratt and flies him out of the planet, and as they reach the edge of the atmosphere he puts the spacesuit on pratt, sacrificing himself so that pratt can live. pratt has an emotional moment where he realises although russell was his father, yondu was his DAD. yondu is given a space funeral and suddenly slystallone and all yondu's old comrades arrive and give him a military funeral with full honours or whatever the equivalent is.

apparently rocket had told them all what yondu did in his final moments, which was enough to redeem him. gamora and nebula have a sister moment, and gamora ask nebula to stay with them, but nebula wants to do her own thing and kill thanos, so she leaves. yondu's follower from the ravagers gives pratt a Zune which is the pinnacle of current earth audio technology to replace his walkman which was destroyed by russell. there are i think 4 mid credits scenes if i remember right. one has stallone and a few others grouping up, i think this is a reference to something in the comics I don't know about. miley cyrus is one of the characters as is ving rhames. one has stan lee who is one of the Watchers. one has a "teenage" groot being told off by pratt acting as a mom sterotype. and the last has the gold lady revealing she has created a new being to defeat the guardians, which she called Adam.
