Seeing cult members and the black pyramid in the trailer got me super hyped.

Then I actually started paying attention to what people were saying after watching it.

I'm thoroughly un-hyped as of now.

Loved the practical effects, felt the story was too small scale for the type of movie they wanted. Plus it relied on some pretty cheesy stuff to help move along the plot.

But it's better than Bye Bye Man and other garbage.

It ended as it got most interesting

Kill List (2011) did everything this film tried to, but better.

Now I haven't seen that movie but I was under the assumption from the clips I saw that it was a heavily grounded suspense thriller, you telling me cultists and extradimensional horrors show up?

Watching the trailer I thought the film would be about some people trying to survive the night while a bunch of cultists tried get in and kill them, which in my opinion would've been a more interesting movie. More focused.

But instead they decided to mix in some eldritch lovecraftian nonsense. Here have a few shots of a netherworld plain, here's a big fucking triangle. The thing is that all these factors could've worked together but the film feels like 3 films that were mashed together.

The practical effects were great fun and a film that goes to that effort in the era of CGI will always get props from me, but otherwise it's a 5/10 and I hesitate to give it even that on account of the generally lackluster performances throughout.

inb4 the "you didn't read lovecraft. I know what is cosmic horror" kid

For a movie taking heavy inspiration from H.P Lovecraft and John Carpenter, there was no tension or build up. I'm not exaggerating when I say within 23 minutes of the movie starting they are already fighting a monster.

I'm not going to lie, for a little over the first half I thought Kill List was going to be one of the best horror movies ever made, then it all went mediocre. Still pretty good.
