it's just supposed to be a longsword in the books and theres literally hundreds of examples of saxon swords to copy. It should be pattern welded (don't think it was an ulfberht or Ingelrii) as well and could have any number of hilt classifcations from the age. Oakeshott famously catalogued almost every hilt design and Petersen catalogued blades.

A shield wall cannot be done with rectangles, the shields need to overlap and lock together, that's why they're large and round. The rectangles would need to be much wider to overlap. Its a very Germanic way of fighting which is what Saxons and Danes were, Germanic cousins separated by a few hundred years of Christianity.


Norse and Saxon weapons/armour, language and culture were very similar at this point. The only real difference being their religions.

Nah, testudos only overlap at the top, a testudo is also not a combat formation. It was used to move forwards while under fire. You can't use weapons in testudo, the shields are too large and you're too close together.

Shields walls are a combat formation and its how they fought. The round shield is large enough to overlap with your neighbour but not tall enough that you can't stab from below and above.

Imperial ear Romans actually fought in a relatively "loose" formation compared to a shield wall. That's why their shields were so large, so you could protect yourself without relying on the guy next to you as much.

They fought in formation but between each guy there would be a small hand sized gap to allow them to thrust their swords.

At the time the Western Romans adopted round shields they were relying heavily on Germanic mercenaries, they used round shields because that's what most of their armies were using. The Romans wouldn't hire mercenaries unless they had equipment to protect themselves, who actually would?

No one hires mercenaries and pays the money to equip them. Round shields and thus the methods they were used to fight (shield walls) are of Germanic origin. Which is why they were most common in Germany, Scandinavia and England.

This is literally Vinland Saga live action series.The stories feel very similar. I like it a lot more than Vikings thrash.

To be honest, they were fucking asking for it. They keep raiding American ships and taking the crews and passengers as slaves. Alfred's just doing what English kingdoms have always done, the concept of complete annihilation doesn't come into the picture there until after Alfred's death, after it becomes obvious peace was never going to be secured as long as the Danelaw existed no matter how many times the Saxons manage to stymie Danish advances and raids.

Besides, you have to figure a guy like Alfred's got conversion on the mind. The idea of lashing Danish militancy under a Christian kingdom to fight God's wars is a heady drug. Kill off all the Danes and lose a potential fighting force, not to mention all those lost souls that Jesus won't love.

Waging war especially during this period was difficult. Each year there was only a period of a few months you could actually fight. The rest of the year men would need to either stay inside to avoid the winter elements or be harvesting the years produce.

The majority of the Saxon armies in particular were fyrd men, basically freemen with little protection or training that worked the land. They were only effective in defense of their homes at a local level and were very rarely raised on a national level. They often had to supply not only their own food but also their own weapons.

So basically both sides would raise an army, fight and the loser would pay his enemies to go away. If he didn't its likely the other side would just split in to several smaller bands and pillage the land until they left which would be more expensive in the end.


There were times when smaller kingdoms in England were annexed, by Wessex. Kent, Essex and Sussex all eventually became subservient to Wessex. The way the Saxons did it was different. They would allow a defeated enemy to maintain his land and wealth as long as he provided troops and paid taxes to and recognized the King.

Mercia for example at different points in history controlled all of central and southern England.
