The ending was the most predictable possible thing. Like 15 minutes in it was completely apparent what would happen.
I felt for Tom Hardy's whole deal but Joel Edgerton's muh family thing was just like saccharine and melodramatic.
There were a couple of good fight scenes but the overall story just dragged it the hell down.
If they had removed Edgerton and the entire brothers storyline and the movie had just been Tom Hardy fighting to get the money for his buddy's widow I would have been sold.
I also just don't like Joel Edgerton as an actor though so I'll admit I'm pretty biased on this shit.

Edgerton was surprisingly good in the film. His performance was grounded and felt somewhat real (given the "Hollywood" treatment of the narrative to begin with) and held its own fine against both Hardy's and Nolte's performances. He wasn't a noticeable weak link at all in the film.
